my 2 year old female has taken a motherly approach toward my 5 month old kitten who I adopted about six weeks ago from my local SPCA. she seems to always be watching him to see what he's up to, they clean each other from time to time, whenever he starts to play fight with her, she puts him back in line. ever since I adopted him she now lays on one of the breakfast chairs right by him. I've also noticed that when she can't find him she walks around the house meowing and looking for him. I think that Blackie kind of believes that T.J is her baby. she's became sooooo atttached to him. but, when I first brought him home she hissed at him for about three or four days. I was just wandering if female cats can act like this after they've been spayed. oh, and T.J was neutered before I adopted him. Thanks!

she was spayed at 6 months old before her first heat, so she never had a chance to have her first litter.

I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer on this one.

I think she is just darling and you are very fortunate that she wants so much to take care of him and protect him.

Too sweet!

I have a cat who for 10 1/2 years never had kittens nor was spayed. I assumed she must be sterile. She's always loved kittens and has been a surrogate mom to all the kittens that have been born over the years.

This summer she ended up preganant. She ended up having a stillborn and I knew there were more kittens in there. I took her to the vet. They spayed her and took out a bundle of dead kittens.

She had been helping take care of some kittens at home when this happened. I was sure when she came back from the vet that she would no longer have anything to do with these kittens. I was wrong. When she came back, she went right to those kittens and acted like nothing had ever happened.

Those kittens are 4 1/2 months old now and she pays more attention to them then there own mother. She still loves kitties.

I am actually having the same thing w/ my Katie. She was a year old, feral and spayed when I got her (3 years ago) and last August, I adopted baby Charlie @ 8 weeks old. From the start. she chased him and batted him around. Now that he's bigger, she's always near him, cleans him and lays with him on the floor. She's still slightly feral but she has found a baby in Charlie. She has also begun to walk around the house with a stuffed kitty toy in her mouth as she howls over the toy. It's almost as if she's lost her baby when she does this.

Hi April...it is not uncommon for female cats who have never had kittens themselves to become motherly. Some male cats will also become like a mother to newly adopted kittens too. It has to do more with the personality of the individual cat, like Blackie has shown you and TJ.

If a female cat is allowed to go through the first season's then yes, its possible for them to have the "motherly instinct". I guess they will have that in their system and since that is what they do, have kittens, and the instinct to do so is strong, it seems to stick with them after they have been fixed.
