I hatch out many birds every year, and after a week, the eggs generally aren't worth keeping to hatch out. When you save your eggs, use an egg carton to store them in. ALWAYS keep the large end up, because this is where the air spot is. I keep mine in the basement, where it is cooler and damp. A refrigerator could be too cool and kill the fertilized egg. You don't want to store your eggs in a warm room, because the embryo will start to develop, and this will weaken and kill it. Tip up one end of the egg carton up one day, and then the other end the next. This keeps the embryo from sticking to the side of the egg. Sometimes I will gently turn the egg carton on its side, lay it back down, and then add something small, such as a clothes soap cap, to keep the opposite end up for the day.

When I am hatching out my eggs, I date each egg on one side. I turn them 3 or 4 times a day by rolling them around on the wire with my hands. This is so much quicker then turning each and every egg over on its side. On chickens, I hold them up to a flashlight in a dark room (or at night) to look for blood vessels and a dark spot which is their heart beating, on the 4th or 5th day.

Sometimes I do something I call the SMELL TEST. I hold each one up to my nose to remove the stinky one. If you don't remove the bad eggs, the fowl air will can kill the developing embryos off.

It depends on the type of bird that laid the egg. If you want them to ly more, remove any old or dud eggs and they should lay again. If it is a young pair, they may just be practicing. Birds usually like to do their laying in the spring for the most part.

21 days, but you can hold it over a flashlight to see if you see the yolk in there or if its not able to be seen threw. If its fertile it will not be able to be seen threw.
