A grey area is a term for a border in-between two or more things that is unclearly defined, a border that is hard to define or even impossible to define, or a definition where the distinction border tends to move. There are several flavors of grey areas:
A grey area of definitions signifies a problem of sorting reality into clearly cut categories. Example: where is the border between erotica and pornography?
A grey area of law is an area where no clear law or precedent exists, or where the law has not been applied in a long time thus making it unclear if it is applicable at all.
A grey area of ethics signifies an ethical dilemma, where the border between right and wrong is blurred. Example: is killing always abominable?
Grey areas are widely accepted in democratic societies and have a clear connection to the notion of tolerance, whereas in societies of totalitarianism, grey areas are typically not accepted on any level.
Many people accept grey areas as a natural part of the human experience, whereas others may react with suspicion and a feeling of defectness or uncompleteness of any thought-system (or paradigm) accepting grey areas.

A grey area is a circumstance that may normally fall into a specific classification of right or wrong but is some exception to the rule, or somewhere inbetween right and wrong.
For example, intimate relations with a child we know to be evil, disgusting and a crime, the black if you will. Consentual relations between two adults we know to be legal and widely accepted, the white. The exception to the rule may be a conesentual intimate relationship between and 19 year old and a 16 year old, this would be a grey area, is it right or is it wrong? It is difficult to make a disctinction in this case.
A person who is on the fence in some moral dilema is not in a grey area, they are just undecided.

Personally I think of the gray area as being an area where it's uncertain whether it is right or wrong. I myself pray about it and study God's word and ask him to reveal what he wants me to do in those types of situations. I also try to lean toward the side of caution. I would rather be sure than unsure. Of course I do think there are a few unnecessary and radical concepts. Such as wearing something over your hair or not cutting your hair if you are a woman...I think that is a bit extreme. If someone is doing this though, I don't think it is wrong but completely unnecessary. EDIT: Gray area among Christians, not gray area with God. God has no gray areas...he obviously knows what is right and what isn't.

Sure, I can help. Think of it this way... when you see things as black or white, you tend to see things as bad or good. But grey means it's difficult to determine whether it is precisely good or precisely bad... usually this happens when an idea seems to have both good and bad characteristics. Also, if you consider a grey area in law, it means the law really doesn't clearly tell you what's legal in black and white.

Grey area is in reference to the term "black or white" When you see something as either black or white, it means you see it clearly one way. For example, the topic of abortion. You can either be for it or against it. If you say "This is a grey area" it means that you cannot distinctly choose a side.

When people refer to things being black or white, they are speaking of absolutes, that things (whatever is being discussed) are absolute. But when there is no absolute answer to something, there is a lot of grey area - the area between black and white.

This has been used to describe mental conditions of people. We are all shades of gray ... no one is perfect or all bad, but all shades of grey in between the two. In the sense of the sentence you just gave, it would mean they just don't know what they are looking for.

It's not clear enough to decide. A gray area is an area that needs more explanantion or information to make a diagnosis.
If it is issue that it is not specific enough to reach a decision.
Hope that helps!

A "grey area" is the fuzzy area between one side and another. It doesn't belong totaly in either area...but lies between them undefined.

neither white, nor black--usually a reference to right or wrong, the area is not discernible as definite one way or the other
