Lots of Italian and Jewish people settled in that city after coming to America. I know it's not much of answer but yes there has always been a huge population of Jewish and Italian people living in that city. That's way people will ask you that question.
Unless you have a Jewish sounding name or a Italian sounding name then there is reason to ask you that particular question. A girl from Montreal asked me if I was Jewish because she knew a person from Montreal that had the same last name as I did and that person was Jewish. Montreal has a huge Jewish Population too and it's in Canada. Though it is a primary a French speaking city in Canada there are a lot of Jewish people living there too.

I do not know why people say that to you and your boyfriend,. Maybe both of you look Jewish or Italian
