why does it seem that every faithful religious person seems to think that their way of believing and living is the only way? I never understood the thinking behind the "Only way with this particular God/Religion" thing. Don't most religions teach tolerance and love of other people reguardless of what religion, race etc etc..they are?

This is for the guy who posted the second answer....I don't really belong to any ONE religion, I believe in God and try to live my life as well as I can. I don't try to push what I believe onto anyone else though. Sorry you took it wrong.

Ignore the comment from the second guy. Clearly this is one of the ones you speak of. These are some of the reasons I have come across:

(a) They enjoy rubbing it in your face that you are not a member of their elite squad and want to point out all the various ways you are sinning and which circle of hell you are going to vacate upon arrival- (see the movie, Saved)

(b) They really don't know any better because this is how they were raised by parents, relatives, whatever. Much like prejudice they have never been shown any other way.

(c) They really have good intentions, but just display them poorly

You ARE right. Christianity is supposed to be about love. Many forget that in their pursuit to aquire 'heaven points'. Guess what? Jesus doesn't have a scoreboard. I believe there is a story many of us should know about the woman everyone wanted to stone and they were told that he who is without sin could cast the first stone. I think everyone should put down the pebble and examine within.

The reason is that many people have gotten stuck in their religion. Religion is good for building a firm foundation, but if you don't grow beyond the foundation to build your spiritual house, you will be stuck there when the foundation dries and cracks, and will not have protection against the upcoming storms. True Christians understand this. So do those of other "religions" who have received enlightenment. Here is a song that may help:

Spread Your Love by the Holy Spirit through Cal Jennings

Ki, Chi, The Source, The Force
Are just different names for God.
It's really very simple,
But to you it may seem odd.

It's through the Holy Spirit
That God spreads Jesus love.
So evr'yone let's all join hands
And spread peace from above.

The world is fille with hatred and war,
Greed, lust, violence, and sin.
We've got to fight a spiritual war
That first comes from within.

So if you call God Allah,
Buddah, Krishna, or Id,
It's time to come together in peace.
It's about time that we did.

Refrain:

Spread your love throughout the world.
Let your light shine bright.
It's time to break the darkness
And turn on our inner light.

because every one wants to be right nobody wants to be wrong.christianity is different than the other religions of the world.they all have love, help the poor,be nice etc...
but along came jesus christ with the above teaching;and also some very radical mind blowing teachings.jesus said.
1.he is GOD
2.he is the creator of all things
3. only way to heaven(not a way THEE way)
4. he IS truth
5.he is our judge
theres more but you get the picture.THE LORD is a loving god merciful BUT!!! he is also 100% holy and cannot look on sin.we all will be judged who will be your defense attorney.you have no hope unless it's jesus christ.he took your sin my sin and took gods wrath (judgement)on himself,so you don't have to take gods judgement.do you know of any other religious leader that would do this for you?
boils down to this question? WAS JESUS LYING OR TELLING THE TRUTH?if you think there are many ways than your calling jesus a liar.you must decide.

Faith, Hope, Love, But the greatest of these is Love. My God teaches Love, I try to Love all, but people sure do make it difficult sometimes. Christianity is seen as a my way or the highway religion. I can only assume this is because of our belief in what God tells us to do, tell others of him and his words. Perhaps it's not so much what we say, but how we say it. I do feel however, I should spread the word of God when I get the chance. However, what I say is my interpretation of what the Bible says, everyone should read it and work out their own salvation with fear and trembling. God Bless!!

If you believe something to be right, then things that contradict what you believe to be "right", you must believe they are "wrong". No matter what the subject.

If you don't believe anything is "right", then you have no beliefs at all.

Examples:
A person who believes evolution is "right", must believe the 6 days of creation described in the Bible is wrong.

A person who believes there is no God, must believe that all the people who say there is a God are wrong.

Everyone has some belief. Yes, everyone has some things they believe to be right, true, and correct. By accepting these things, these people automatically state that the things contrary to this view are not right, false and incorrect.

Christians believe the God of the Bible is what he claims to be, tho only true and living God. This being said, we believe any other "god" is not-true and non-living. If we don't reject the opposite of our view, then we don't truly believe what we claim to affirm.

Even you have fallen into this "trap". You seem to believe that it is right to not tell anyone else they are wrong. To accept this view, you must hold the view that anyone who stands up for their own beliefs and contrasts them to others have done something intolerant and unloving. To hold the view that it is wrong to say others are wrong contradicts its own premise. You cannot say something is wrong without saying those who do so are wrong, and you can't do this because, in your own view, it is not right to call others wrong.

Therefore, your only option is to never stand for anything. Nothing is right, because to declare anything right is to also declare those who oppose your view as wrong. To hold the view your question suggests, you can have no value system at all.

I personally have no time for religion as I'm a Christian! Religion can't save any one and thankfully Jesus didn't come to establish a religion but rather to establish a relationship between man and God. I only listen to what the Lord tells us in his word. Jesus said that he is the way, the truth and the life therefore this can't vary.

Ah maybe you should study culture to see how you have been taught.
Postmodernity, on the other hand, is a separate term that describes the social or cultural implications of postmodernism.

The assertion that meaning and experience can only be created by the individual, and cannot be made objective by an author or narrator.

(rel. comparative religion) is a loosely defined term concerning peaceful relations between different religions, and is also used in a number of related ways:

* As a synonym for religious relativism; that one's religion is not the sole and exclusive source of truth, and that some level of truth and value exists in at least some other religions.
* As a synonym for ecumenism. At a minimum, ecumenism is the promotion of unity, co-operation, or improved understanding between different denominations within the same religion, or sometimes between different religions. The latter is sometimes called Macro-ecumenism.
* As a synonym for religious tolerance, which is a condition of harmonious co-existence between adherents of different religions or religious denominations.

Well, if you didn't tolerate other religions, then what is your own religion teaching you? To be hateful towards others? If that is so, then it obviously isn't the perfect religion, if people belive their way of life (religion) is the one (like most do or don't care), then i guess they have the right to be smug about it, but not openly as to annoy others.

Need to tolerate but not accept the false teaching. The bible is the Word of God so all needs to be according to that standard. We can tolerate things all we want but does that mean we have to accept teachings that are contrary to God's Word? I can tolerate you wanting to believe whatever you want but don't put me down for what I believe. Works both ways.

Because they are bigots. dictionary.com definition of bigot - A person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion.

Fortunately, I'm a christian who is not a bigot. I'm like you ...I don't really belong to any ONE religion either; I believe in God and try to live my life as well as I can also. Like you, I don't try to push what I believe onto anyone else. You rock, girl! :-)
