Winter formal? Prom? I'm very curious, being a sophmore in highschool, and i hope folks out there can inform me about the way of the formal highschool dance. Who buys the tickets? Does the dress have to match the suit? Can you go alone? When do you ask? Can you help me?

When I initially read your question with the explanation I thought it was referring to fraternity/sorority formals. So I first thought to myself, don't get too drunk and leave with the person you came with. But since you're in high school the guy always buys the tickets, your dress doesnt have to match the suit, but he should be wearing a fairly neutral color (like black for instance) anyway, you can go alone but I would suggest with friends, and you can ask whenever you feel the time is right. Dont think too much into anything because the more you think about it the less time you'll have to make a reaction to your thinking. Don't worry about it too much, but everyone worries just as much as you do and remember that. You're not alone in questioning all of these things. But most importantly, whether you go with a date, by yourself or with friends, dance and have fun. You only have 3 years of high school left and make the best of it. It goes by fast.

Well since it is 2006, a lot has changed. Whoever ask for the date is normally the one that buys the tickets. No the dress does not have to match to suit, normally the guy get a tie, vest, shirt, or cumberbun to match the color of the dress. You can go alone, this is more popular and more fun, go with your friends and you will have a blast. You normally ask someone to the dance when you feel like it, most people ask 2 months before, especially with the prom, so the guy can get his tux reserved.

I hope this helps.

A lot of the etiquette for formals and proms has become more casual in society these days. Your school should have guidelines on if you are allowed to go alone or not, and what they consider appropriate dress wear. They will inform you when tickets become available. Some schools will allow dresses above the knee, or strapless, etc., some won't. True formal gear (ankle length gown/dress, gloves, etc. ) are now usually reserved for Homecoming Queen and her court, if at all.

Either one of you can pick up the tickets but since you are in highschool maybe you should split the cost of the tickets. I think it looks better if couples match so your date should at least wear a tie or vest that matches the color of your dress.

Practice being formal as if it was the most natural way to be.
