Do you mean cyanide? Cyanide inhibits cellular oxidation processes, which give the cell energy. I believe it binds the Iron on a cytochrome inhibiting electron transfer. The cells rapidly die and ingesting enough will be fatal. Massive cell death = organismal death.

I had a friend who attempted suicide by ingesting cyanide. He failed. He ingested quite a bit and did not die within minutes (or at all).
I think it's a high amount of the gas that kills quickly.
