If you are dog-sitting, don't let the dog go out in the yard. Take him out on a leash. It may be an inconvience but it would be worse having to tell the owner that you lost their dog.

You won't be training that dog not to leave the yard!!!! Get a good leash and take the dog out as often as needed! What did the owners do? Give them a call and ask. That may help too! Good luck!

Keep him occupied while outdoors. Don't leave him in the yard by himself. If you want, you could purchase an anti-jump harness for the dog and consider it a gift to make your brother's life easier when he returns.

Is the dog being left outside? If so bring him in. Also if he is still intact (no neutered) he may be running for that reason. At minimum the dog is bored when he is outside. He needs mental stimulation and until he can be trusted he shouldnt be left alone. If you had a kid that always colored on the wall with crayons...you wouldnt leave your kid in a room alone with crayons. At that point it is your fault for not monitoring

If you're just dog sitting him, you're not going to train him. You need to go out with him so you don't have to explain to your brother that his dog got run over! Please don't tie him up - that's a real good way to ruin a dog's temperament.
