Our friend when visiting New York says his ambition to walk round the Statue of Liberty's torch was ruined because it's been closed for security reasons. Until it re-opens, terrorism has won.

the torch has been closed for a long time though... it has nothing to do with the threat of terrorism. I work in the Empire Stae Building. If they closed the ESB to tourists out of fear... that would be "terrorim winning" but thats not really what has happened.... I mean its too bad that the torch is closed...

"Did You Know?
The Statue's original torch was the first part constructed in 1876. In 1984 it was replaced by a new copper torch covered in 24K gold leaf which is lighted by floodlight at night. The original torch is currently located in the lobby of the monument. Access to the torch has been closed since 1916. "

On a separate note, some 2 thousand years ago the Standard carried by Roman legionars was held in as high regard as our own statues of freedom.

The Romans are no longer the major force in this world.

In 2 thousand years, nor will your country.

Enjoy your time, and do the best you can with it.

The torch has been closed for years because of acid rain. It wasn't open in the late 70's.

actually the torch was closed about 40 years ago, but the head is what is now closed for 'security' resons.

its getting rediculous, and we live here and know what happened.

Terrorism won when GWB was elected in 2004 -- most people's reaction to fear is to turn to big daddy, however illegitimate & incompetent he may be.

I am from NY and I say terror has only won, when in your own mind, you decide it has.

The politicians are blaming everything on the terrorist. Don't bother, GWB is the blame.
