The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

I use to own a 1972 Porsche 914 and thought I had one of the rare Bumble Bee versions. I spent years seeking info off my VIN but had no luck until I actually send snail mail to Germany. Direct to the Porsche headquarters. Two months later I got a letter and photo copies of all documents they had on the car off in storage.

Might try same thing with VW.

I used to work for a company that dealt with VIN numbers all the time. Call Volkswagon and ask them for an outline of their VIN pattern. You can use that as your guide to look for the right info. Hope this helps.

VW Beetle owners groups. History of the Beetle vol.1 has most of the serial numbers (if you buy/borrow the book)
