American and Cheddar cheese have the same ingredients, so in that sense, they are the same.
American Cheese is a "young" cheddar. It is milder in taste, and softer than cheddar.
Cheddar is aged longer, so it is drier, and the flavor is more concentrated.
Sharp Cheddar is aged longer than just plain cheddar, and has a stronger taste.

American cheddar is, of course, made in America and can be yellow, or white, mild, sharp, extra sharp-there are many varieties. Sharp cheddar is aged between 9 months and one year and can be made anywhere on earth. Canada, England, Ireland,Australia, America make it, etc.

No. Sharp refers to how much "bite" the cheese has. There are also mild and medium styles, as well as other types like white (no coloring), English, etc.
