Could be that you have sleep apnea. When you stop breathing at night (apnea) your brain will make your body wake up just enough to restart your breathing. If this pushes you back into stage one sleep then that would account for you being so tired when you wake up, even if you have had a full night of sleep. There are a few treatments out there, surgical and otherwise. The three most popular:

-CPAP machine (you wear it night, kind of like an oxygen mask but a little different)

-UPPP (don't ask me what that stands for. it's a long word that you would have to go to school for many years to learn how to pronounce. but it's a surgery where they remove part of the upper part of your uvula so it doesn't obstruct your thoat at night.)

-Oral Appliance (you wear the device at night and it pushes your jaw foward in hope of helping to keep your throat open. It is kind of like a retainer. this one is probably the least expensive)

Then again, you may not have apnea. It could be Idiopathic Hypersomnia, or narcoplepsy. (That doesn't always mean you fall asleep standing up. There are different grades of narcolepsy. Most of the time it just means that you are SUPER tired during the day. In which case you just need medication)

Hope all this helps.

It sounds as if you may be sleeping but not resting. You might want to check the temperature of the bedroom. If it is too warm, you will wake up groggy and tired. A cool/cold bedroom is best. YOU might also want to check your caffeine consumption several hours before you go to bed because caffeine will disturb your sleep. If you have a television in your bedroom, you should take it out or put it on a timer to cut off your television once you fall asleep. You could also try taking some eucalyptus or lavender oil sprinkled on a towel or on your pillow. ( I personally prefer eucalyptus). You might also try a machine that makes a soothing sound that will lull you into a sound sleep. If all else fails, you should go to your doctor and have a physical with blood work because you might be anemic or have chronic fatigue syndrome.

I don't drink anything with caffeine in the afternoon. I also meditate with soft music playing in the background.

If you want to go the medication route, there are several sleeping medications out there, but you must give yourself 8 hours to fully sleep.

Good luck! I have insomnia and these two things I do plus the bipolar medication I'm on (side effect: drowsiness) put me to sleep within a hour of taking it.

Don't eat/drink anything with caffine in it past morning time. Also, don't eat a couple hours within the time you usually go to sleep. When you eat before you sleep you always wake up hungry and that may make you more tired in the morning.

You could take an herbal extract called Valerian before bed. Also you could use a buckwheat eye pillow with fresh lavender oil drops on it while sleeping. The pillow massages your eyes while you sleep and the lavender scent calms you. I've heard that 10 minutes with an eye pillow is like 2 hours of deep sleep. And it works for me. =)

Don't exert yourself in the afternoon. Do it in the morning. Turn the lights down early. Reduce the noise in your environment way before bedtime.
