It's called "registering" for Selective Service, if I'm not mistaken. And again if I'm not mistaken, I think it's still in effect, although there's no draft. But you don't have to apply to enter into the service.

In the US it's required by law that you register for selective service. It is not applying for the army. Your name is entered on what amounts to a draft list. So go to the post office and fill out the card and get it over with.

I think you mean "Do I have to register for the draft when I turn 18?"
yes.
This is from their website

If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number. Be sure to register before your 26th birthday. After that, it’s too late! Selective Service does not collect any information which would indicate whether or not you are undocumented. You want to protect yourself for future U.S. citizenship and other government benefits and programs by registering with Selective Service. Do it today

You have to register for the Selective Service at 18. I didn't, but I went in the Navy at 17 anyway, so I was in the system.

No, I don't believe they have the draft anymore. But hey, it's not a bad place to be, especially for getting a very good education and to make it a career. You can retire very young, get another job and retire from that with an ample supply of income, when you get to retirement age. Think about the pluses......

no draft, so you don't have to sign up for the army, but there is something called Selective Service.
