I think so, people want to complain about sex and violence on the television, try reading the bible. Tent stakes being driven through heads, whores, sex , disease, it even mentions a woman who enjoys men who are "hung like donkeys". Now that is a little more graphic than Wyle E Coyote getting blown up by a stick of dynamite.

Yes it is, complete with tales of a loving father who wants to kill people and make them burn forever if they do the slightest little thing wrong -- if they cannot be controlled and brain-washed by the church.

is the bible bad for children? yes and a no answer -- for a short reply.
there are some good "stories" in the Bible that children can associate with -- and there are some stories -- completely for a mature readership -- like Abraham sacrificing his son --or almost etc. Everything in the Bible -- could be read -- but to different understandings and different age-groups. Plus of course -- addressed to groups with different beliefs. You are not going to sit --a Chinese, a Russian, a christian, a Jewish, a japanese...boy/girl in the same room...all at 8 yrs. old -- with different up-bringing and cultural background etc. and have them listen to the Bible stories. That is a No, No. It would become a Yes, Yes -- when the children have been educated in a western style education system...Hope you follow up...the subject is as complex as the Bible stories themselves -- whom shall we believe -- is a 2000 yrs. question...and still valid. Enjoy.

Not just the bible. All religion should be kept away from children as they have not developed the logic needed to debate the reality of these matters. It should be treated in the same way as pornography and restricted to over 18s (over 85s in bible belt US :-) ).
The problem is that children automatically believe adults, particularly parents and teachers - people who they trust. so, if a teacher or parent says "there is a god" how can a child refute this (or believe in it) - NOTE I don't say know because that is impossible in religion anyway - even Wicca!!! So, soes a child even know the difference between belief and knowlege?
Don't corrupt the innocent.

The bible describes man as he is, a depraved creature... my question to you is, if men who enjoy reading filth and vile perverted sexual stories in newspapers etc and watching them on Corrie Eastenders, Emmerdale etc, filling their heads with poison, why don't they include the bible in their reading material if it appeals to that which you have just mentioned... i think you must and will admit that the context in which the bible mentions these things is entirely different than that of the editors of the porn mags and trash newspapers and TV bosses who seek to entrap young minds in a fantastical world...!

Teach the children the Two Greatest Commandments (which are from the Torah and confirmed by the Quran)- the ones Jesus said are the two greatest commandments according to three of the biographies of Jesus, known as the gospels:
Matthew, chapter 22:verses 35-40,
Mark, chapter 12: 28-34,
Luke, chapter 10, 25-37

They are the Message. Children can understand them. They can do no harm, only good. No more Bible is needed.

I think what is worse is the abuse of children in the name of the Bible. Is it fair and moral to subject a child who can not make informed decisions in life to have the Bible shoved down their throat from the moment they first take a breath? To place un-nessecary fear into them by stipulating that unless they do this that and the next thing they will go to hell? To drill into their heads that certain aspects of human nature is wrong and sinful? In responce to your question, yes this book is bad and demeaning to the concept of a child being innocent. Last time I checked, morals had absoutly nothing to do with religion, but control have everything to do with it!

You have focused on the things in the Bible that no child is ready to deal with.
The Bible is a spiritual and historical book. The things you mention are all due to sin in the world because of man's disobedience to God.

But every child must learn at his/her own level. A loving parent would teach of the scores of other good, wholesome and healthy things in the scriptures. The Bible can be a excellent basis to establish morals and virtue.

Removing religion from this question, as this seems not to be the aspect you are concerned with, I certainly dont see what is wrong. It has been used for many years as book of instruction, teaching morals and respect to children. There will always be violence and sex, and hiding it from the children will always be a daunting, if sometimes embarassing situation. However there is no need to overprotect them.

If I am being honest, I think this is a rather stupid question. The bible teaches us the depravity of man and the need of an ultimate saviour. Why would it be bad for children? Children should know what is right and wrong and of course, parents would use proper decorum when teaching their children to preserve their innosence. For example, one can teach a child that sex out of wed-lock is wrong and not only wrong put physically and emotionally crippleing to both individuals involved, without going into details.

Who are you? The Bible teaches history! Did you ever hear of WW1 or WW2 how about the Revolution or the Civil war. What about Vietnam. Maybe we shouldn't teach our children about wars either. The Bible teaches us the way to act and to love. I don't believe I've ever read the verse you say. Do they still show the Road Runner cartoon on TV. I don't think so. You have to have cable for that one. What do you do, just sit all day and watch cartoons and TV and dirty magazines. Yeah, I want my kids to be like you. Get real!
