When he does the growling and or barking you need to try to put a stop to it.. If he is on a leash tug at it and make a noise so that he understands you mean business.. You must be the dominant person so make sure u r convincing when u tug and do a noise.

A very good example of this dog psychology that keeps u in control so you can have family and friends around is the Dog Whisperer. He is on the national geographic channel in the evening and on the kinds. Check your local listings, because he varies, but it is SO worth it to watch. You can learn alot.. I did.
He is the reason we were able to get my mom's dogs from jumping on people when they arrived.

Good luck

If you think about it, I'm not sure you would want to change his behavior....as it is, no matter who comes through that door (and it may not always be friends or family) he will protect you with all his might. If you change that, then who knows what might happen if someone breaks in or tries to hurt you.

When these friends come over, instead of keeping their distance they need to stay around - one to show they aren't scared and two to let him know they are not going to harm you...if that is just not an option then you might want to think of putting him in another room or maybe even in the backyard when you know you are going to be having a visitor...best of luck

One of my dogs had a problem with jumping on people when they came to the house. The rules in my house are "No touch, No talk, No eye contact" with her until she is calm. Her tail can't even be wagging too fast. It didn't take her too long to understand the rules either.

Oh...and the visitors didn't get to decide when my dog was calm enough to pet...I did.

a dog thinks that it is his duty to protect the master. barking and growling is normal. if the dog is under 6 months, u can teach him to stop when u order him to stop. u may need to cane him for that. this training is easy.

Sounds like this puppy wasn't properly socialized or just has an anti-social personality.

Try a squirt bottle--when he bark spray him in the face and tell him 'no bark'

Don't reinforce the behavior. When someone comes to the home do not answer the door until the dog is calm and tell whoever enters your home ignore your dog until it is calm and comfortable with them there.

If dogs see people often, they'll become friendly. Just be patient. Also if some people come near him and try to contact, it will speed up the process of getting friendly for your dog.

You answered your own question, "He's spoiled rotton". Get the dog into a basic obediance training class and fast. He's definately showing his dominance isn't he? My mom would NEVER allow that........ Cheers Bogey
