After the movie Clueless in the 1990s- California dialect as portrayed in that movie, became common among teens as a way to be popular (as always, California is emulated because of Hollywood=wealth=glamor etc.)
California accent is very annoying to my ears. It includes frequent use of the word "like", lazily pronounced consonants, and "oo-fronting"- where the oo sound is brought forward and pronounced through the teeth i.e. deeewd! instead of dude.
