The best toy for a new kitten is another kitten! Believe me, it is so much fun to have two. And they teach each other about biting and using their claws -- such common problems askers here are always having trouble with.

At www.littlebigcat.com Dr. Jean Hovfe has an article, "Before You Get a Kitten". The first part is about acquiring a kitten and then further on in the article is a section on how to make you kitten feel at home etc. I haven't read all of it and I'm sure she goes into litterboxes, where kitty should sleep and all the other issues you will have. She is a veterinarian and her partner is a cat behaviorist.

The whole world is a toy for a kitten, bottles caps, paper bags and toilet paper rolls, you can make balls out of bunched up foil, etc. If you have long hair they will play with that. If you close your eyes the kitten will tap them gently to see if they will open again.
Your fingers are toys (not a good idea to allow that) as are your toes, especially when they are under the covers at night.

A brown paper bag! Kittens love to crawl into spaces and explore. The sound of the brown paper while they're inside just creates more fun for them. A empty medicine bottle with a good top when filled with a few pieces of kitten food will keep them happy as it rolls around on the floor. The plastic you tear from the top of a milk jug is another toy. Even a flashlight will have the kitten chasing the light around the room.

Cats tend to be amused by the cheapest of things....one good option is tying a string to a stick and swinging that around, a makeshift fishing pole of sorts. When I first got my cat she was a kitten...I had a fishing pole type thing that attached to a wall, an she played with it for at least 40 minutes uninterrupted. It was really cute. :-)
Another good option is the curly thing from a milk gallon (when you open a gallon of milk, the plastic thing that holds the lid on). I worked in a pet store for awhile, there were quite a few people who said their cats loved those. That must have been te case because one of the toy vendors started making milk carton curls.
Also, many pet stores sell little toys (mice, balls, etc) for pretty cheap...$1 for two or three...stuff like that.
You definately dont have to pay a lot to entertain your kitty. It's very likely she'll come across things on her own that entertain her.

Crunch up a piece of paper and tie it to the end of a string, pull it around for the kitten to chase or you can tie it to something so it dangles and let the kitten bat at it. Another thing is a paper bag.

the best toy we ever made was with a piece of PVC pipe, a piece of fishing line and the feathers from a fishing lure. We cut the hook off , of course. They love it and could not get enough. Also a company called Meow Meow makes the best cat nip stuffed carrots. Our cats go CRAZY over them! Hope that helps!

i have a new kitten and we bought lots of toys but it would rather play with a screwed bit of paper or foil , any bit of string or wool (keep your eye on it ), ping pong balls, don't worry your kitten will find lots of fun things to play with in your house ... have fun with your new addition x

give it an empty container of oatmeal, the round kind, they can roll it around, hide in it...punch a small hole on the bottom, thread a piece of yarn, tie a bell to it so the bell is inside. my kittens love this.

Give it a cardboard box. Cats love going inside of them and chew them up. Also my cats love those rings that are on milk containers. I also have a cat that goes crazy over q-tips.
