I've always believed that the majority of head problems can always be solved without psychiatrists. They always seem to quick to prescribe a drug or label you in a category you only show some signs of. Two of my brothers and myself all have head problems and the only real advances we've made in dealing with them was made by ourselves. The doctors and drugs did nothing.

Anyone else feel that people are becoming too quick to see a shrink and pop some pills to try and solve their problems?

I used to think that way. Now I see a psychologist regularly and take two depression medications. If you feel you can handle your problems without talking to someone that will not judge you, bravo for you. However, some of us have sucked up our prides and said "we need help".

:-) One tricky thing about going to a shrink, is if that professional head doctor not only cops an attitude that he knows all about the inner workings of the human mind (they DON'T), but also thinks that you, the patient, is crazy and not worth listening to.

In many cases this is true, but the shrinks do help a lot of people, who either WANT to be helped, or who are unable to help themselves.

If one has the knowledge and internal wisdom to pull oneself up, that is best. If not, no one should shy away from asking for help. And if you don't get help the first time, go somewhere else, to someone else, and try asking again--in a different way.

Maybe someone like you (if you're having difficulties) should consider a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist. They mostly use counselling and life adjustment techniches since they cannot legally prescribe medications.

I believe that in extreme cases, medications can be beneficial as a situation is being worked through UNTIL it is worked through. But all in all, meds are pushed on clients way too often. I've been there myself.

I think antideprsesants cause weight gain and other bad effects. but some meds can help w/ medical problems such as overeating. I feel that medical doctors can help. But psychiatrists have been a waste of time for me. Maybe they have helped others who have nobody else to talk to or have a hard time figuring things out, perhaps.

Nope. I don't think that at all. I love my psychiatrist. I need medication for what I was diagnosed with.
