I am watching after my sister's dog. She is still a puppy. My sister feeds her "human food". At my house dog does not eat anything and she does not like dog food. Today she threw up a little. The only thing that she ate was uncooked oats and crackers. The dog has cold and wet nose and acts healthy, however I am still worried. What can I do?

Actually we fed all of our dogs human food and they lived for a very long time. Human food, I guess is not an issue. The issue is that she is throwing up.

I wish I could get her to eat anything else, but oats is the only thing that she ate. Normally we feed her organic fresh meat, natural cottage cheese for calcium, milk, carrots, fresh eggs, fish and cooked oats with meat. I guess she misses my sister.

Any change in diet can upset a dogs stomach. It is okay to feed dogs "human food" but uncooked oats and crackers aren't what a dog really needs. The uncooked oats may have made the puppy bloated also. Keep an eye on the pup, the surest sign that a puppy is ill is a change in their behavior. If it is parvo (which I doubt because parvo generally shows up as diarrhea with a very distinctive smell) the puppy will crash quickly. Not having an interest in food is a sign that a dog is ill, but it is also not so horrible for a dog to go a 24 hour period without food either. Sometimes when a dog is ill their bodies naturally tell them not to eat. The most important thing is to make sure that they are still getting plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Some good human foods for dogs are boiled chicken (all bones removed of course) COOKED rice (preferrably brown), squashes, pumpkins, carrots, potatoes.....just to name a few.

I'm not entirely sure uncooked oats and crackers are good people food for dogs to eat. There are a few things they can eat, but only as TREATS. The foods she ate at your house may have upset her stomach. Let her rest and put down puppy food for her. She will eat when she's hungry enough. She will NOT starve herself.

I don't think it is Parvo, like the other poster said, so please don't get worried. I just think it's a case of upset stomach. Some dogs can't hand wheat.

They have dog food for a reason! You should talk to a vet and get some information. They would know best. In the meantime I would try mixing some puppy food and human food together. You can also try this method; add either a couple of tablespoons of oil or gravy to some puppy dog food. I do that with my dog and he just loves it. Good luck!

Oats and crackers are filler foods. The puppy needs protein and vitamins and calcium. Did you know without calcium gluconate in its diet it can have seizures and die. That is why dog food is designed to have a balanced diet for them. Get puppy food immediately. Incidentally, uncooked oats can tear the walls of her stomach as well as her intestines. That might be why she is vomiting. Do the right thing.

its okay if you feed your dogs some human food but if it as a lot of sugar and fats it wont be too good
and some human food contains some chemicals thats not good for dogs like chocolate if you feed your dog chocolate then it might loose fur
and maybe your dog threw up because the food was either spoiled or the dog did not like the food

Ok, well try bribing her so to speak with a special food like tuna fish or gravy... AS FOR THE PEOPLE SAYING HUMAN FOOD KILLS DOGS, IN SOME CASES IT IS TRUE JUST DEPENDING ON THE DOG! MY DOG EATS HUMAN FOOD ALL THE TIME (ALONG WITH DOG FOOD) AND IS 14 YEARS OLD AND GOING STRONG!

good luck btw!

She is missing her owner and is feeling uncomfortable. She should start eating in a few days. If not, take her to the vet.
TELL YOU SISTER NOT TO FEED HER HUMAN FOOD< ASK THE VET IF YOU DON"T BELIEVE ME< IT WILL KILL HER EVENTUALLY!
To keep the pup comfortable, keep her warm and exercise her. This will make her hungry and she should eat.

I have a dog that has diabeites and has to eat when he has his shot. In order to get him to eat his dry dog food I mix in some chicken. If we have had smoked chicken from the store we have the parts we like for our meal and then take what is left and debone it and mix it in with his dog food. Or I bake or boil or fry some chicken to cut up and mix in.

She is upset that her owner is gone and confused. I would continue to feed her what she is used to since she is already upset and you don't want to upset her more. She needs to eat. Offer her some chicken and rice. She probably just has an upset tummy because she is so upset. Like if we get upset about something, it can cause us to have an upset tummy, same goes for dogs.

She could really just miss your sister. We left our dog with friends one weekend and she didn't eat anything because she missed us. As long as she's drinking water she's probably okay, she'll eat when she gets hungry enough I bet!

Good luck!
