I went to a wedding recently when they had the maid of honor sy a poem and they released butterflies, it was really nice. I was the one who had to put the butterflies in the box, it really isn't that hard. (they come in a sleep state, then they wake up in the warmth)

Letting go of doves is nice too.

Sand ceremony is a great replacement for the unity candle. It's a great way to unite both families and it's something you can keep and display in your home. Check out www.onceuponatimeabq.com You can choose the colors of the sand and engrave the vases.

Unity orgasms ... haha, that's funny. But seriously, why do you have to do the "unity candle" thing at all? My hubs and I didn't have any crappy, cliched unity candle. Our ceremony was great without it. Just skip that part. Here's an alternative: Each of you can write a poem and read it, i.e., you write a poem for him and he writes a poem for you. Cheesy, no? Well, so are UNITY CANDLES! At least the poems would be original. : )

Sand ceremony, as another person answered. You can use two colors, one for each of you, or three colors with one representing "God" or "Love" that your officiant will pour in. It's especially good for weddings with children as each child can add a color of their own to the mix. Just make sure your container seals tight or your memories will end up being swept into the trash one day...

Wine Ceremony, good for wine lovers. White and Red blended together or choose your favorite vintages.

Ring Warming, tie the wedding rings together and pass them amoungst your guests, allowing them to bless them and offer their good wishes.

I've got these ideas fleshed out more on my website:

Have fun planning!

We read a few words about family and then gave each other's mothers a rose and handkerchief with our names and wedding date on them. Not a dry eye in the place. If you want more help with this idea email me. :-)

Jump over a broom, tie hands, smash a glass...

research other cultural traditions and see if you like one of those better... that or make up your own tradition that is unique to the two of you.

You can use different colored sand and mix it together in a single container. My sister did this for a beach wedding. She keeps the container on her mantle in her living room.

My sister-in-law and her husband lit one of those big 3 wick candles in memory of her dad and her grandma, and his grandpa, who had all passed away.
