I have a tournament at my dojo tommorow. I've decided to do kata(forms) and kumite (fighting). One of my instructors, who spends tons of time helping me has noticed a small problem in my katas: I'm TOO strong... he says that I need to use more HIPS and less shoulder. I need advice on some excercises or something I can do to improve my kata. Also for fighting, I'm a girl (on my brothers account..dont freak out) 5'3 amd 115 pounds...the person im going against is pre chosen: 6'3 and 195 pounds...how do I win? Stay in close with speed and rapid punches or stay far out and kick constantly?

Only lots of practice will help you use your hips and not your sholders.

I would try moving in close and using your speed. If you try to keep back you will find out that he can still hit you with his fists and you might not even be able to kick him because his arms are so long. Get inside, strike quickly and get out before he can react. Let him start a move and move around it and in before he knows what's happening.

Good luck!

I'm 5' tall and weigh 113. He is right about the shoulder and the hips, the strikes will actually have more power with less effort coming from the hip rather than the shoulder. Try doing hip isolation exercises, it helped me. It's not a normal martial arts exercise, but if you tend to throw your strikes from your shoulder, it will help. I did the same thing at first.
When fighting a much larger opponent, your greatest asset will be your speed. The taller person will try to kick, if you go in fast, get in close to strike, and get out fast, they won't be able to. Watch out for their reach, don't run into their fist. Good luck, I'm pulling for you.
