It was disturbing. I dreamed my youngest son, age 20, who I am closest to, was killed on a railroad track. I dreamed I cried.

When I awoke, however, he was very much alive. I am grateful for that. My dreams, generally, don't foretell the future, so I am not terribly worried the dream will come true. It does help me appreciate how much I love my children.

Why do you think I had this dream? Is it a sign of depression, does it represent fear or insecurity? Have others had dreams like this where things turned out all right?

I am normally a very emotionally strong and stable person. If a child of mine were killed or died of other causes I WOULD cry. But I don't lie awake nights worrying this will happen.

Interested in your opinions.

Death
To dream about the death of a loved one, suggests that you are lacking a certain aspect or quality that the loved one embodies. Ask yourself what makes this person special or what do you like about him. It is that very quality that you are lacking in your own relationship or circumstances.

Railroad
To see a railroad in your dream, signifies that you have laid out a set track toward achieving your goals.

To see an obstruction on the railroad, denotes the path toward your goals will not be an easy one. It may also indicate that you have lost track of your goals,

To dream that you are walking alongside the railroad tracks, signifies much happiness from your skillful completion of your tasks.

Crying
To dream that you are crying, signifies a release of negative emotions that is more likely caused by some waking situation rather than the events of the dream itself. Your dream is a way to regain some emotional balance and a way to safely let out your fears and frustrations. In our daily lives, we tend to ignore, deny, or repress our feelings. But in our dream state, our defense mechanisms are no longer on guard and thus allow for the release of such emotions.

I copied the above interpretations from the website below. Just very quickly from reading what they say, I'd say your son is special because he is different from you in some way. Your goals may have been somewhat different from the way your life turned out, and you are seeing that maybe you push your son to achieve things that you could not achieve. The tears are making you realize that you cannot do that, he has to live his own goals.

You are the most qualified to interpret your own dreams. Nobody else can do it for you. My experience tells me that what you ´´see´´ in a dream are mostly symbols. For example; your 20 year old child is a symbol of something or someone that is really valuable to you. If you loose that which you appreciate so much it will really impact your life. A railroad track might have a specific meaning to you personally, like something that comes and goes or make a sound or some other meaning that you atach to it. You cried; No one else knows why, only you. Hope my answer helped, God bless you!!!

My two cents: I think we humans make our dreams overly special, making them into fortune telling mechanisms or by giving them too much meaning. A certain dream can be a projection of some worry or issue going on inside your mind -- maybe you can try to become more aware of anything that you're worried about (maybe even some unconscious worry?). And I would think that you don't want to go overboard with this to where you think there must be some issue and you then artificially connect the dream to something; maybe the dream is the result of some random mind noise. Whatever the cause, it's like having thoughts pop up throughout the day -- nothing good or bad about them and maybe or maybe not representing some underlying issue -- if it needs to be looked at more closely, then ya look at it, otherwise ya don't :)

well you said you are a strong person emotionally, so i don't think depression. some dreams fortell the future, some don't. one, did you watch a disturbing movie before bed, these can trigger bad dreams or disturbing news. it could be a warning, that something may happen, but that doesn't mean death, maybe just the "death" of a dream or job or something wanted. sometimes we may be worried about something that may trigger a bad dream. i have had very bad dreams about my children and others, but the dream didn't come true like i dreamed, sometimes my dreams are just caused by stress or something mentioned above or fear or worry. but sometimes the dream forwarned something that was going to happen figuratively. it may be about someone else you know, your son representing a male figure. sometimes it takes awhile to come to pass. i most always forget and if something has or does happen that a dream forwarned me about i don't remember them, but i know of a few that i do remember and wonder!!! but i'm glad you don't lay awake worried about it, you can't change it anyway. all you can do is pray for your children and leave them to GOD!

I am so sorry you had a dream like this, I too would be crushed. I'm not a psychiatrist, but I think that it may be a message to yourself about how much you really love your children, no matter how old they are. I cannot remember an instance of such a depressing dream (I can barely remember any of my dreams!), and I hope that it does not affect how emotionally strong you are. It isn't healthy to live a life of worry and fear, as I have learned the hard way. Believe what you want, but if you do believe in god, then trust in him and you will get that extra burst of strength you need to help you along. Good luck, I hope that I helped!

A person’s life is full of dreams. Dream can be about one’s ambition which he gets fulfilled with the passage of time thru his own hard work, intelligence, good planning and with the blessings of Almighty. Another is day dreaming which is really not a good habit and can be controlled with one’s will power. But what about the dreams a person experiences during sleep. Do they hv effect in our real life? What do they mean? What is their interpretation? The person asks to his friends, elders and seniors in his social circle. Sometimes he gets satisfactory reply and sometimes not. These days Internet is a rich source of information. So one does not need to depend on others for one’s dream interpretation. The Yahansmaniac Community member suggests the following.

well, it is nice to know that there are men who are sensitive.
You could have had this dream for many reasons, but usually when you see someone die it means longivity. My interpertation would be that your son will have a long life as for your crying you could be stressed over something. If you cried out of fear of God than you will find the truth for your salvation.
All the best in your future dreams.

I would say that you are worried about your family taking off on you. This is probably because you have been too engrossed with something else(a hobby, work, etc.) to spend as much time with your family as you want to, so you're worried they're going to abandon you to what seems to be the focal point of your life now. Or maybe you're just dreaming random nonsense, as happens fairly often.

Dreaming of someone's death could mean a warning, worries about that person.

death = departure

No, it is not a prophetic dream and I hope not. Very often, when you dream of someone especially love ones' death. That means you have feeling about him. In you case, it could be the show of love. Subconsciously you may have guilt conscience. That guilt conscience could be about not communicating with him well in reality. Having projected him being died in your case means you feel that there is need for you to communicate more with him.
