(Man, heavy question. Took it literally and limited the scope to _just_ the US and impact on me; otherwise, overwhelming....)

How about lack of willingness to take responsibility for actions and the consequences thereof? I can't count on society to save my behind, ESPECIALLY if it's my bad choices coming home to roost. Compassion is a virtue, but accountability also has its place, and the "I'm just a poor little victim" mentality is getting really prevalent....
"The schools are so awful...." That's news? It still doesn't relieve parents from the responsibility of making sure kids are getting homework done, or raising Cain with teachers who accept poor-quality work. (My grade school teachers, in ALL subject areas, routinely marked Fs, and "correct and resubmit" on any paper with 3 major errors in grammar or punctuation. The working-class parents thought quite reasonable, but a few wondered why some teachers were so lenient in grading.)
"The kids don't respect authority..." Did you think about RAISING kids before deciding to have them at all, or perhaps having them at outrageously young ages? Did you start reining them in early, setting limits? Don't give me "it takes a village" unless you're prepared to let the village intervene at any age, in whatever way it sees fit.
"But it's so ROUGH, because...." All people, all times, all cultures, have had to face adversity. This does not give you a free pass to act obnoxiously. I don't really care if you're poor; you've had a lot of company over the years. Some have made it bigtime, some have flopped, others advanced very slowly through careful planning (saving, self-denial, working to get the kids ahead). Welcome to Life 201.

Great question. I actually started thinking about this about 15 years ago. And things have just gotten worse. It is self centeredness. Self centeredness is a developmental stage that people are supposed to grow out of. When a child is small, they think they are the center of the world, because everything they do causes a reaction. Cry, they get fed or changed or whatever. Their world is small. But by the time they enter school they should start to learn that what they do effects others. But what has happened is there has been a shift in schools and parenting...don't tell a child they are wrong or bad..this will cause low self esteem. As with anything taken to an extreme this attitude has caused problems. We have raised 1 generation and are in the middle of raising another generation of children that can see no further than how something effects them. They still think they are the center of the universe. That it is okay to hurt or kill anything that they don't like. Their is NO respect for others. The word respect has taken on a new meaning. And it is not a good one. "the only thing that deserves respect is ME, and if you DIS me, I have the right to kill you". We are no longer taught that respect has to be earned. Our daughters think it is a status symbol to be called bitches and ho's and our son's think it is a status symbol to be called pimps and ******. Since they have no self respect and no respect for others, they have become selfish and self centered.

Greed, selfishness, and closeness. When people do not think outside themselves, their home, their family, their country. This is the most damaging to society. Society needs to work together to function and the second someone does something selfless or nice for someone else they become a "hero" but it shouldn't be that big a deal. Everyone should be acting in this way. There are plenty of people who do - fire fighters, cops, soldiers, social workers, etc. etc. who put their lives at risk or on hold to absorb others problems and save others.. But the majority of society as a whole is so self-absorbed and especially Americans as a whole are very closed to the rest of the world. People in Europe make fun of us because we grow up knowing only one language and ***** about having to hear a few words of another language while people in Europe learn 3-5 languages and they know the benefits of being united and being wordly. It's sad when people know the Simpson's names but can't name 5 world capitals. It's sad when people know how much a drink at Starbucks cost but don't know that there are people surviving on that same amount to get them through an entire year. It's sad when people are greedy, miserly, selfish, and rude. It's sad when people cheat on their spouses because they are only thinking of what they want. It's always ME ME ME and never anyone else.

That is the biggest problem in society and the root of all other problems. Everything else could be solved if we could only think outside of ourselves and learn to help others and unify with the world around us.

This is so easy for anyone who lives in Southern California or the Southwest: Illegal aliens flooding our streets, schools, hospitals, work sites and assaulting our culture by NOT wishing to assimilate. The real criminals are the Activists. The Activists - brown and white - are anarchists who want to destroy the U.S. because to live any other way or have any other belief system would consign them to actually having to work for a living. The poor aliens, so many are so wonderful, will ultimately pay a terrible price as deportations pick up and workplaces shun them because of an increase in heavy fines. The consitution mandates the president FIRST to secure the country's borders against foreign invasion. George Bush has been giving Americans the finger while welcoming the invasion. What have we put in the White House? I could go on for another hour about this fiasco and crime brought to our doorstep but it is too late and I haven't the energy to continue.
And virtually all Americans now know how cowardly they have been in denying the obvious and putting their children and grandchildren in harms way. Take a stand, for chrissakes!

There are many things that bother me...I think one of the things that affect me the most is the poor state of the state of the social welfare system. I work in a group home with foster youth, and it's amazing how terribly incompetant a lot of the social workers are, how the girls' "support team" often knows so little about them, and the fact that people who work in the social work field are paid rather poorly and as a result unqualified people are hired.
Luckily the group home I work in is one of the better ones in the area, and there are still many problems with the one I'm in, mainly with unqualified staff. Yet, the problems the girls deal with as a result of their support team outside of the home is also pretty depressing.

the biggest problem with todays society is unbelief, the feeling of having to rely on ones self ( everyman for themself ) . what is most important in the world is the manual of how to live a life that is pleasing to God, this manual being the Holy Scriptures. now, the word of God cannot be defiled or devalued, but the people who bash God's word can be, and bashing the word of God defiles THEM! it is the unbelievers who make it hard for people to believe.

The LACK of importance placed on education. Everyone (politicians, people in general, parents, etc) constantly speak so highly of education but don't do ANYTHING to change the poor educational system that we have or to instruct their children of its importance in their adult lives. Everyone thinks you are just fine and dandy when you make it out of high school...when in reality a high school education is NOTHING (especially as our curriculum is sub-standard and have you seen the grammatical errors JUST in this forum!?). However, if you wish to pursue a higher education it is a giant money-making pit that leaves the poor disenfranchised from the process or up to your ears in debt!!

It effects me the most because it leads to poverty, ignorance, hatred, one-dimensional thought process, dependence on everything but yourself and a true lack of understanding of the world around you.

I think the biggest problem is respect! Kids now a days don't seem to respect anything,They rove in gangs, spray painting buildings, beating/shooting people, picking on old and Disabled, you see kids of the age of 8 or 9 roaming the streets at midnight ! where are their parents? The parents haven't taught their kids respect. There aren't many People in business who seem to respect the little guy,People don't respect each other. What ever happened to a person young or old, when they say they will call back in 10 min. they actually will call back in 10min,What ever happened to People respecting, helping, caring, trusting, and loving? One action leads to another, and somewhere in this day and age, it's been lost....

The need to have a college education in order to survive financially. I would not be in school and I would be out of my mothers house by now. America says they support education but the library closes before the mall. School is soooo expensive and I have to work 3 jobs to survive without school. The economy is horrible

Lack of Discipline and training of our children.
Y'all can get mad if you want but I think our society took a huge nose-dive with the women's movement. The kids now a days are disrespectful, slovenly or dress like a bunch of hoochies, incorrigible, and most of their parents couldn't care less. they should all get a good old-fashioned SPANKING!!!! or be jailed for allowing their children to behave in this manner. It's absolutely disgusting and embarrassing to this entire country.
