this guy has two children that he barely goes to see even though he lives within an hour from them.My grand daughter had him in her life just long enough to form a bond and now he only comes around if his concious bothers him, then when he feels better,he stops.I am so worried about her emotional state. She is 8 years old and will sometimes say "I hate him." but i know she doesn't mean it. He has hurt her so bad,the question I have is,my daughter,my husband and myself decided a long time ago to always let her call him if she asks to and never say negative things about him in front of her,we don't want her to feel like WE caused her to lose respect for her dad,but are we doing more harm than good. Sometimes when she's on the phone with him he cuts her off so fast, she just looks so hurt afterwards,we've tried talking to him...but that only lasts so long. Thanks for your time.:)

I had a dad like that - and i adored him for the longest. No matter what I was blinded to the type of person he was until I was 13. I went to spend the summer with him, and was so miserable I came home early.

Why? Because all he did was talk bad about my mother - and I realized that she never said one bad thing about him. Funny how at 13 you can loose respect so dramatically for a person - but I did for him. So be there for her when he hurts her, basically just do what you have been doing, it will make all the difference in the world as she matures.

your approach is just perfect. do not let negative picture of her dad build up in her mind with your utterences about him.let her form her own picture about him
