Is there a need to live in fear and to live a sheltered life because of God?
God is merciful. This doesn't mean "do whatever you feel like it, and it'll all work out okay." But it does mean that God does have mercy for us when we fail if we have accepted his gift of salvation and if we are working out our salvation, to the best of our ability, with his help.
As far as being sheltered, I am way out in the world. I know all manner of people and do all manner of things. My life is not "sheltered" at all. There are things I refrain from doing--I don't lie, I don't steal, I don't murder, I don't worship idols, and so forth--but these things aren't sacrifices. In my experience in the past, whenever I've done something like lie, for example, it never felt good, and it never turned out good. The things that God commands me not to do are not denials or punishments. They are things that if I refrain from them actually make my life better. I am free when I am not a liar, because I don't have to hide my motives; I don't have to remember what I said to whom; I don't have to feel like a fraud. When I speak the truth, always, I become honorable and it feels right. It's not a sacrifice at all.
This is just an example of living my life as God asks and not "suffering" because I don't do what other people do with seeming impunity.
I just wonder what you're doing or not doing that would be different if you believed there was no God. What on earth could it be? And is it really all that grand and wondrous? Or is it just some petty self-indulgence that leads you ultimately to feel crappy anyway?

K, I'm not really sure how this is a question, but I think I know why your cousin wouldn't want to know.
I personally wouldn't want to know if God wasn't real because then all the comfort and fulfillment I get from the Lord would just be a figment of my imagination. I would have nothing to trust in, nothing to lean on. I would have no reason to do good, to have joy even in sorrow. And even if I knew that God didn't exist, I'd probably follow Him anyway, because its so much better than trusting NOTHING.

Sometimes you have to go on blind faith, and that is what it is all about. I look at it this way, I live my life, as if there is a God, and I hope one day to be in his Good Book, and end if there is not a God, then it won't really matter will it.... but at least I will know that I have lived my life to the best of my ability, and that is a great accomlishment and attribute to anyone.

Because it would take away her hope. Some of us don't have the most wonderful lives, so we look to the afterlife as our salavation, the good times we need to believe in in order to get thru the suffering this world has given us so far. If atheists can't understand that, then they're nowhere near as bright as they keep bragging they are. We are human, we need hope.
And of course, there's that whole murdering thing. If you don't have to fear the judgment of God, all you have to do is worry about getting caught, which in this country with the high murder rate, isn't a good thing.

It's a very negative concept of god that most people believe in and worship. It's a concept where god rewards, punishes, must be obeyed, judges people for their sins -- people behave because they fear god. That's immature and completely against what the REAL god is all about: unconditional love. And one can only get an understanding of this real god if one lets those negative concepts go -- and what results is an understanding of love and what you and everyone else really are (with this realization, one can't harm another person because you KNOW them as YOU). So ... let those negative god concepts go....

I'll ask a question with regards to her answer , is she a devoted catholic or whatever sect or church she's in is she really devoted to her faith? Because it's like asking a 4 year old child the same question except not about God but about santa claus. They'll be crushed and felt cheated if they found out that Santa doesn't really exist.

You cousin is right on.
Better to live and die thinking you are going to heaven then to live a real life without "knowing" all the answers.
Actually I'm kidding. Your cousin is so scared of the truth she doesn't even want to consider anything but what she already believes. Why does she believe? She probably doesn't know.

In response to the first answer:
That innate thing in us that says to be good was put there by God.
Otherwise "survival of the fittest" would become manifest in killing anyone you see as a threat. Murder would become justifiable in many instances, and we all know that our consciences wouldn't allow that. The definition of good and bad as defined by our conscience doesn't always fit with "survival of the fittest" and is one point invalidating evolution.

i dont see believing in God as living a sheltered life, and I don't think saying there is a God should make life scarier. but to answer your question, i don't really know, i've always believed in God and i don't want to know life without him.
