It boils down to reputation
Republicans are considered conservative and morally against things like gay marriage, abortion, etc
Democrats are considered liberal and, as some would say,
"immorally" FOR gay marriage, abortion, etc.
This does not apply to EVERYONE in each party. I am saying that is the reputation as perceived by the people of the USA
What we need is some Republicrats.

Social programs are notoriously failures. I believe in smaller government, flat taxes, and low regulation of business. I also help the poor. My tax money is generally more wasted than anything else, so that's why I get indignant when taxes go higher. Watch "Stupid in America," the John Stossel report on how much our tax dollars have NOT helped public education. More money doesn't fix anything.
And flat taxes do help the poor. Business with less regulation would not exploit the worker in this day and age, because competition is too stiff. There would be more capital to hire more people, and at better wages. By the way, when taxes are cut, the government takes in more revenue because of booming business. Liberals like to ignore this, but it's verifiable. Tax cuts work every time they're tried.
And I'm not totally against civil unions. But I am in favor of banning abortion.
Socialism and welfare programs should be something Christians focus more on doing willingly, but government-mandated socialism has never worked and never will.
I should also add that I'm terribly disappointed in how Republicans in Congress have handled themselves in the past few years, especially with regard to spending and Social Security Reform. Term limits have never been more important to me.

For me, the issue is the lesser of two evils. The Republicans have a pro-life plank in their platform, and support traditional marriage. They also support lower taxes, which allows me to keep more of my money to use as I see fit.
The Democrats (and many Republicans now, which I can't believe) are for bigger government, especially for social programs. These have never performed as advertised. LBJ and company resolved to end poverty as we know it, and all their programs did nothing but enslave a generation of poor. They barely survived on subsistence, and could never work to get out without losing the subsidy.
Regardless, with either party, I have to hold my nose whenever I go to the ballot box. The last time I didn't was when I voted for Reagan's re-election. If there were a pro-life, traditional marriage Democrat running against a RINO who was pro-abortion, I would vote for the Democrat.

It's a matter of grouping.
Both parties would like to have enough groups to make up a majority of voters.
Conservative Republicans would have groups that: believe
unborn babies should not be killed for the sake of convenience, that homosexuality and child molesting should not be promoted, that the death-tax should not be in effect to tax the dead twice (once when they earn the money and then again when they try to pass it on (this is why family newspapers fold when the big cheeze dies)) to their loved ones. Generally they dislike aliens crossing the border.
Liberal Democrats tend to be against wars both because of loss of life and loss of money. Joe Liberman is an exception to this. Liberal Democrats tend to promote homosexuality but not child molesting. Generally they also dislike aliens crossing the border.
One thing the Republicans and Democrats have in common. Most of them were busy ramrodding through a bill (the new bankrupcy law) at a time when the media had most of the nation focused on Terri Schievo and Michael Jackson. Thanks to over 90 million in bribe money from the credit card industry, the law slid through congress like a greased monkey.
The new bankrupcy law is designed to grind the poor man into the dirt.

Because big government does not equal help for the needy. Democrats were in power (congress) for over twenty years and there are more poor now than when Johnson started the 'war on poverty'. Their way just doesn't work. People need to have jobs, lower taxes and self esteem. Six generations of welfare kids that never work, rely soley on the government for food, medical care and housing are not productive members of our society. They drain money from those that truly need it, (disabled, elderly, sick, etc.). Liberals love to do things that make themselves feel good but are seldom up to the task of changing the system for the better. I suppose Christians vote mostly republican because of
the somewhat 'questionable' values the democratic left has embraced, (abortion, socialism, removal of 'in God we trust' from our currency, etc). The Bible teaches us to indeed help the poor, and churches and religious groups help more people daily than government does. Flat tax, or fair tax will help EVERYONE, including (heaven forbid), the people that create jobs for America. No one is trying to do away with regulations except the left trying to remove all regulations on porn sales and drugs. FYI -- not ONE CENT has been cut from social programs since Regan took office in the eighties.
You need to read up on the facts and leave the propaganda aside for awhile.

The Republicans wrap themselves in the symbolism of conservatism and thus manipulate conservative believers into thinking they share common goals. But as many have noted, the easiest place in the world to get a reach-around is in the hallways of the RNCHQ. Those boys step pretty lightly.
But conservatives should note that Republicans spend like drunken sailors and give tax breaks only to the economic class that pays for their campaign expenses, i.e. the top 2% financially. And they should note that Republicans have controlled House, Senate, White House and SCOTUS for six years and still haven't outlawed abortion or passed amendments against gay marriage. The elite of the Republican party, like Bush I, are Episcopalians, don't believe the Bible is God's word, think notions of virgin birth are for the ignorant in the poor churches, and are more concerned with their stock value than family values.
but people of faith are perfect targets for con artists because they are used to believing a sales pitch with no proof.

Great question. I'd really like to know why this is too. I have some theories but I would genuinely like to hear what devout Christians have to say to this. (I am atheist with respect to the Bible, and agnostic with respect to whether there is a supernatural being who created the universe, and solidly liberal/progressive).

They support the conservatives because many conservatives claim to support other aspects of the Bible, such as homosexuality being wrong, and such. It is a shame, but I think that is why. I think that some also don't see that the conservatives stand for the things that you listed above. They are blinded by the rhetoric. In general Christians are good and the right wing preys on that.
