Yes, you're basically paraphrasing John 15:13 in the Bible where Jesus says "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. "

God sent his son to be the ultimate sacrifice for us. (It is not stated just like that in the Bible.) This is in The Bible --The Word of God. He was The lamb without spot or blemish. He died on a cross and was buried and rose from his tomb on the third day. This was necessary so that we would be saved from eternal damnation.
Read John 15: 13 -14.

It was taken from John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." (NKJV) This is Jesus words, he continues in verse 14 to define His friends, "You are My friends if you do whatever I command you."(NKJV)
The long and short of it is that Jesus was saying that He was to lay down his life for His "friends".
