Kits are OK, and Boots produce the best ones in my opinion. However, the only proper way is with raw ingredients and patience. Plenty of recipes on line or in books. (By the way, the house stinks for days when you boil everything up)
Dont buy the plastic bag full of ingredients that you just add water to and leave. I did and the thing burst in the airing cupboard.
I wasn't very popular!!!!!!!!!!

If you are just starting out, try steeping some grains in the brew in addition to the extract. There are many kits out there. If you have a homebrew supply store near you ask them. They will be able to steer you in the right direction if you are looking for a certain flavor or style. Try picking up a few beer magazines or books that offer different styles and or recipes. Relax, don't worry, have a homebrew!!
p.s. once you become more comfortable with brewing you will find that you can save money by brewing your own beer. You can spend as much or as little as you wish. I have been doing this for 16 years now and love it!

What about about your own extracts, hops and yeast and tailor-brew your own beer?
If you want to try other kits, go to http://www.maltose.com This site has 300 cloned beer recipes. You're bound to find something you like.

I tried once making a German beer and I don't know what went wrong. It had the look, smell and taste of beer, but it was a "near" beer. I gave up and gave away everything I bought to make beer. I can buy beer cheaper than I could make it.
