Well if you bought him when he was 6 months old, he already knows he wasn't a part of your family for the first 6 months of his life, so the jig is up.

Wow...I really hope you are joking and you aren't going to treat this dog TOO much like a child in the future. Dogs don't realize they are different when they are adopted...they just realize they are a part of a new pack. I have never told my dog she was adopted (because that's just STUPID) and she acts just like my other dog that wasn't adopted.

Do you have a cat, too? Cats are evil creatures and I think would try to confuse the dog by telling him that he is adopted. It's better the dog heard it from you. You wouldn't want him to resent you for the rest of you life. A mad dog is dangerous ~~remember Cujo? Tell him soon.
Edit!! HA, HA, Ha, ho, hummmmmmmm some of these people are in need of a funny bone transplant!

hi-- your question has 2 sides. a human adoption. a pet adoption--i.e. an animal. there is a major difference. when it is a human adoption-- depending on the "age" you adopt the baby or the child...depending on his level of understanding his new family and social environment etc. -- I would venture to say you have to let a few short years pass by --before telling the subject of adoption. as for animal adoption -- you can tell it right away...since the pet knows that he/she has adopted you with love...it is all reciprocal....
enjoy.

I'm adopted??? Is that why my mom and dad don't look like me? My sister looks like me, are you going to tell me now that she's not my sister??? We are the same breed, and same liver and white, and have the same kennel backround a few generations back. Hmmm. Let me go ask my mom after she takes me for a walk and gives me a cookie, hmmm life is tough for a dog. Cheers Bogey
