Wow. There are many reasons why people take on a religion. At the personal level, it serves as a source of strength and love when there aren't any available elsewhere. Also it fits conveniently as a placeholder for anything inexplicable and seemingly magical until a better explanation is found. It can externalize the conscience of a person and elevate it to this "godly" proportion to amplify its power to such a level such that otherwise weak-minded people would not have been able to muster up enough by themselves to control their frailties.
At a social level, it can be a common reference point where strangers can build relationships upon to establish communities. Race and ethnicity can do only so much, but religion can cross such boundaries. Unfortunately it can also serve as a mechanism to mobilize an army of fanatical warriors. It provides the pretext for actions that may otherwise find very few support from people. It serves as a proxy for an authoritative figure behind laws that are laid down.
Specifically regarding science vs. religion, I don't think they are necessarily mutual exclusive; sure, there are cases that they do (when the age of the planet and the origin of life are concerned), but there are also questions that science cannot (and was not designed to) answer. Questions like why we are here and where we can draw strength to overcome our lesser impulses and to endure hardships.
The trick is to realize when to allow ideas in life cross over from science into religion and vice versa. One cannot dominate and replace the other. If a society too religious its scientific innovations will stagnate. If a society doesn't have religion, its members may live empty lonely lives.

Show me the proof and explain to me the logic that you believe that God does not exist. Where science has tried to prove if certain events that are mentioned in the Bible actually took place or could have science has proved it did or could. Because you have free will you can choose not to believe in God, but keep this in mind when and if you decide otherwise ( and I hope you do ) when you ask him to forgive you HE WILL.
God made us in his image. We would not be intelligent if it wasn't for him. Our intelligence is part of that image. There is an intelligent answer for dinosaurs being on earth at one time and here it is....God made the earth in one day, We don't know how long a day is in the eye of God. But I rather believe it is millions of years and the dinosaurs where just a part of his molding period in the development of the world. I want keep up with what I perceive as intelligent responces and answers to support the fact that God does exist at this time. It's not because I am not willing, it's because I would like to get to some other questions tonight.

Why do bright people question belief in God without exploring their own sense of spirituality? I believe in God because of what I experience when I pray and meditate. Most people do believe in some power greater than themselves and I think this is very wise. Why do intelligent people think they don't need the inner strength and wisdom that can come from spiritual experiences? And I am not religious at all, anymore. I'm just talking about believing in a positive source of life energy, which happens to be the most important resource I have.

Lets hear some of that "proof and logic." There are some seriously educated and intelligent people who believe in God. Have you ever heard of a ThD degree. That is probably about as scholarly as you can get. That degree requires about 60 semester hours more preparatory work than a PhD plus 3 years of full time residency just to enter the program. I would say that intelligence is part of it.

How else can you explain life? How can you explain the incredible power of the brain, of instinct and intuition? God gave it all to us, and He's still working on us just as He's been since He created Earth with that "Big Bang."
p.s. Why not just go ahead and believe in God? What harm can it do? If you're right and there's no God, then you die just as you think you're going to and nothing happens. But if you die and God does exist, you'll spend eternity in heaven, blissfully happy and content, instead of going to hell and being tortured in ways you couldn't possibly imagine.
And just out of curiosity, what "proof and logic" conflict with God?

Why do intelligent people believe in God?
Generally, the belief begins to grow after they have left the University which has evolution as it's favorite religion. Peer pressure is great.
All powerful is self-evident.
All knowing?
He know everything that is available for knowing which is considerably more than any one else.
Good?
We better hope he's good.
Enduring the coming tribulation just wouldn't be worth it if he was bad.

What proof and logic conflicts with the belief in God??
You cant make a statement like that and not back it up with anything. But you need not bother because i already know that anything you could possibly mention can be easliy explained or i can even show proof to the contrary. So good luck with your disbelief it wont get you anywhere.

What proof? My friend the universe itself is proof enough. I know the facts. I know that the chance of the universe's very existence is so astronomically high that many phycisists deem it to be impossible! OK maybe the universe is to much for you to handle so lets work with the cell. There are so many fuctions in a cell that biologists wonder how it works, or why our bodies don't rip part at the seams, and why we are even here is a wonder. That is proof enough for me

Hello Boopie.. :)
Intelligence has nothing to do with belief in God..it is a matter of ones heart..
If that was the case, then no doctor's, lawyers, business men, scientist, etc. would be believers either..see how the question of using ones intelligence does not coincide with the belief in God..
1 Corinthians 3
18 ¶ Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God: for it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise,
that they are vain...
In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)

Because proof, and logic, do not have all the answers. At this point in time, with all our technical limits, between God and Science, God still seems the more likely of the two. Religion has nothing to do with intelligence or logic, it is about faith.
