Jesus also said, "Whosoever shall deny me before men, him I will also deny before my Father which is in Heaven."

What kind of a "church" would deny it's very foundation? - Will Jesus deny knowing Peter after Peter denied knowing Jesus 3 times ... and this "church" in Heaven?

Why didn't Jesus say "... "my Father's Church?"

Are we being lead astray by Jesus himself?

The rock that Jesus mentioned is the statement that Peter made, not Peter himself. Jesus used two Greek words for rock in the text. He said "You are Peter (Petros) and on this rock (Petra) I will build my church."

1. Petros and petra reflect different genders—the former is masculine, the latter is feminine; thus a distinction is drawn.

2. Petros generally is a smaller stone, a fragment; petra is a more massive, bedrock-like substructure.

3. Christ distinguished between petros and petra by the use of pronouns of different person. Petros has a second person pronoun as a companion, while petra is used with a third person pronoun.

4. In the symbolism employed by Jesus, Peter is designated as the one who opens the doors to the kingdom (which he did for Jew and Gentile—Acts 2; 10). It is not customary for an object to occupy two roles, e.g., the foundation and door-opener, at the same time in the same metaphorical illustration.

Therefore, it is Peter's claim that Jesus was the Christ that is Petra, versus Peter who is Petros.

Now as to the denial, Jesus also told Peter that "Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has asked permission to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail. When you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers." (Luke 22:31-32) So Jesus knew Peter would deny Him, and would also be restored.

Jesus ask Peter to say he loved Him three times to affirm forgiveness for denying thrice before the rooster crowed after Peter turned away from knowing Him. John 21:17

Jesus never said he will built his church upon Peter... Peter was a human, and like us he made a lot of mistakes (like denying Jesus)...When Jesus said "Upon this rock I shall build my church." the rock he meant was not Peter, the rock he meant was the truth Peter said before, that truth is that Jesus is the son of the living God (you can read it in your Bible Mat. 16 ). If you really want to understand a little about the Bible (cause we will never end understanding it), you can't just read it ramdomly...you have to study it, is like every other matter.
Bible was written in different languajes...and some things are not that easy to translate from one languaje to another. In the original lenguaje the words used to say rock are different (petros=Peter, Petra=rock, the rock jesus was talking about). Hope this helps

The interesting thing about Peter and all the other apostles is that none of them were really convinced of who Jesus was before he was crucified, like you correctly stated Peter denied even knowing Jesus but after he was resurrected and the apostles witnessed him alive again 11 of them were martyred... they believed so strongly in who Jesus was that they died for it. That's quite a testimony for the validity of the Resurrection.

This was a play on words. Jesus was actually founding His Church on the rock of revelation. I don't have the Hebrew reference with me, but maybe someone else can step in. Have a happy day.

Peter was forgiven for his sin, because he repented and trusted in Jesus. Same as we can do today. Peter was not sinless -- no human is.

Jesus didn't say "my Father's Church" because He was asserting His own divinity. He is God.

Good God! Bible is a religious book, NOT a lawyers manual! Jewish wise men have those kind of arguments, and it's cool, but this is just too much!
