gel and mousse alone will not curl your straight hair (no matter how much scrunching you do). You should apply a light mousse throughout to give it more volume & then use either a curling iron or hot rollers. Spray each curl before releasing from the iron or curler.

first of all, when you shower, don't use conditioner. it will make a bit frizzy which gives it texture. (don't worry. it'll go away once you curl it) towel dry your hair good and then add some hairgel or mousse to the tips of your hair, then blowdry it, and don't brush it. divide your hair into sections and start with the bottom one and curl. add a little bit of hairspray. repeat with all of your bottom layer. once you're done, get a hair clip and scrunch all your curls back into your head and clip. do all this with all of your hair and you're done. add more hairspray to your whole hair. don't add mousse at the end because it will make your curls go down.

if you don't want to do all that, use hot rollers but wait after they're compleatly cooled down before you take them off.

Do a thermal set with a Marcel iron, place each curl with curl clips and let cool for bout 20 min, take them down and just let them fall into place. That is the most beautiful curling style. Be sure to adjust the heat according to the texture and condition of your hair.

Alot of African American ladies have thermal sets in their hair, such as Mo'nique.

mine has always been straight, and the only success i ever have is to roll it just at the time it almost completely dry after washing it. the curls take well and last up to 6 hours with moose or hair spray.
any other time, between washings, forget it, the curls don't hold at all plus the heat damages the hair really bad.

Did you try a lot of hair spray? Usually it is really hard to curl straight hair.
