The depression phase in a bipolar disorder can become paralyzing and dysfunctional. You may even become very tearful and withdrawn, sleeping for long hours or unable to sleep at well, If your depression gets really bad and uncontrollable, you should go see a psychiatrist so he can recommend some anti- dpressant.
You'll find out you feel a lot bettter on it.

I've found that when you are depressed, the best thing to do is just baby yourself since the type of depression you have is for a limited time. When I am depressed, as much as possible, I eat whatever I want, and climb into bed and watch a bunch of movies that I've rented. Watching the movies helps because you are able to escape your present reality for a few hours.
Then, if I am able to drag myself out of the bed, I will go for a run or practice my violin. Then I feel better because I've actually accomplished something.

When I'm depressed I don't really believe things will get better, and also I can't even remember what it was like when I did feel okay. The only thing I can do is tell myself to hold on, and it's normal to have the negative thoughts. Yeah, some days are better than others. It's best to break the cycle of negative thougths if you can because you can spiral downward. I usually try some kind of physical exercise or loud music.

I'm being treated for the same thing. I think it depends on the level of Bipolar that you have. For me, the depression is easier for me to handle on some days than others. It all depends on if it was just part of the mania/depression mood swings or if something in particular threw me into a depression.

Good luck. Are you medicated? (You can email the answer to me if you would like)

I am not bipolar but I am a.d.d. which is very similar. Being depressed is a natural thing with both of these "syndroms" For me it's knowing that I can funtion taking the antidepressants and that in itself is a reward. But with bipolar maybe you could look at what you could be without the meds ? My son-in-law is biplolar and I know what his wife goes through. Good Luck.

Bi-Polar is difficult to treat because of the mania and depression that accompanies the illness. I am sure you are probably already on medicine specific to your type of Bi-polar( I or II) You may not feel better in a week. It may take longer depending on the severity of the illness. You probably are seeing a therapist which is whom you need to be telling this to. If you don't have one, then get one. Bi-polar depression is the worst. I know, I have it but it does get better. What helps me sometimes, is just getting up and going for a walk, if even just around the block. You have to force yourself. The worst thing you could do is sit around wondering when it's going to get better. We all have to take responsibility for our wellness. Medicine helps to stabilize but we still have to do the work...meaning help ourselves.

I'm sorry that some of us have to deal with this...I find drinking water when I get depressed helps me cope better...I don't know why; it's not a cure, but it takes some of the edge off.
