now that everyone has told you what it means, please go back to work and pulverise the little **** who said this to you. and throw in a lot of vulgar abuse while you're at it. now you have a reputation to protect. you go show them what TRUE fis-wifery is about.

Fishwives were working-class women who sold fish from baskets along the quays of fishing villages, touting their wares at the top of their lungs. (Loud and obnoxious.) Sweet Molly Malone aside, this was not considered a reputable occupation for women, who too readily picked up the rough talk of sailors, and gained a bad reputation for both the timbre and content of their speech.

As a "fishhusband", you could expect to be nagged, cursed and swore at day and night over every little thing.

"Fishwife" is definitely not a complement!!

Y a its a " screaming fish wife"
Id take it as a compliment myself.
Picture your self standing on the dock snapping orders at your sailor husband, and crew.
Takes a strong woman to do that, be in command and all.

You must have provoked someone for you to have been called a fish wife.....it is a derogatory term and veiled....the person who called you this obviously wanted to insult you but couched it more delicately than openly swearing at you.........as already mentioned in the answers above they regard your conduct as loud and possibly abusive and they were not prepared to stoop to that level themselves while voicing their opinion of you.......Perhaps it is time for you to change the way you speak to or treat others.......
