Because they are racist and conditioned by the media. They probably have never even spoken to a Muslim.
Just ignore them. They really don't want to know about Islam. They are happy to have someone to turn their anger on, then they don't have to examine their own lives.
It happens all the time with things people don't know anything about, they just accept what they've seen on TV or what their parents told them. It is called "Contempt prior to investigation".

Because Bush and company have demonized the Islamic world in an effort to gain support for their wars of aggression. Bush has tried to sell his wars as a modern day Crusade because that works so well with his religious base.
A lot of stupid people have fallen for it.
