The best hot dogs can be found in the Papaya King chain, through the city. The best hamburger can be found at Paul's Burger Palace, on Second Avenue and Saint Mark's Place. Go to any restaurant in Chinatown for good Chinese food. To see if it's good, look in the window. If the place is filled with Asain people, then it's good.

"New York's food culture, influenced by the city's immigrants and large number of dining patrons, is diverse. Jewish and Italian immigrants made the city famous for bagels and New York style pizza. Some 4,000 mobile food vendors licensed by the city, many immigrant-owned, have made Arabic foods such as falafels and kebabs standbys of contemporary New York street food. The city is also home to many of the finest haute cuisine restaurants in the United States."
And I agree with the previous poster ... Chinatown all the way!! I recommend dim sum or something =)

Whatever you do, don't eat in places that you can find in any random suburban strip mall. The West Village is loaded with great inexpensive restaurants. Try Mary's Fish Camp for awesome inexpensive fresh seafood, Cowgirl Hall of Fame for Southern/BBQ food in a fun funky setting or Risotteria for a huge selection of well prepared filling Risottos with nothing on the dinner menu over $15.

All these places are great that they have listed. Just be sure to double check the times that they are open. When I went to NYC they weren't always open when we thought they would be open. Have fun in NYC!
