But no devoted thing that a man devotes to the lord,of anything that he has, whether of man or beast,or of his inherited field, shall be sold or redeemed;every devoted thing is most holy to the Lord.No one devoted, who is to be utterly destroyed from among men, shall be ransomed;he shall be put to death.[RSV]

In a nutshell, It says anything devoted to the lord is holy, and can not be sold or taken back.

The part you confused as human sacrifice is actually stating somewhat of the opposite of the above. It says any man who is devoted to the lord and falls from grace can not be saved and shall be put to death.

This is an old testament scripture, from a time before God was as compassionate as now. This was a time when even a mistake could be considered blasphemy, and the sentence was death.

Basically, if this was still in effect, a large portion of the Catholic Church would receive the death penalty. =P

I think I understand what you are trying to figure out here, so I will try to explain. The topic of devotion here is actually in two parts and some Bibles don't translate it into two parts. The ancient Hebrew language was and is difficult to translate into english. Devotion of things as when you give them to a priest as an offering con not be taken back. # 2. If you devote your child over to God for the priesthood they are there for life and in a sense die as far as it being their own life. It is a sacrifice, but not literal death human sacrifice. Does this help at all?

in my view i do no longer in basic terms like the term "sacrifice" because of the fact as you defined on your question it potential "to make sacred". the closest element i will think of of from a pre christian viewpoint that is something comparable to a sacrifice may be a blooding. An animal is killed (often via reducing it extremely is throat) and it extremely is blood accrued in a bowl. Then utilising a twig from an evergreen tree the blood is sprinkled on the accumulated people and the article (maximum often a newly built construction) being blessed. The animal is then eaten via all in attendance. in spite of the actuality that no longer technically unlawful you wont locate many modern-day Ásatrúar doing this as to be completely trustworthy it extremely is not very friendly and extremely few people extremely have custom equipped premises for our gatherings that could lend themselves to doing this. the subsequent subject with sacrifice that I even have is that we are generally no longer giving up issues yet fairly sharing them with one yet another and the gods which isn't probable a sacrifice interior the way the word is concept. A sacrifice may be pouring out all the mead, yet of direction all of us drink some first. All that being suggested I do agree that each thing we do is a sacrifice or a minimal of the stability of sacrificing one element to realize yet another, yet this may be a characteristic of all human existence fairly than something particular to any faith or non secular direction to illustrate, you sacrifice a number of your early existence as a fashion to benefit issues helpful to adulthood, you sacrifice a number of your freedoms as a fashion to get married, you sacrifice a while and your funds to have youngsters, you sacrifice a while in a task to make funds, you may might desire to sacrifice your man or woman existence to maintain your toddlers and so-on and so-on. i'm hoping it extremely is clever because of the fact together as I typed it i ought to experience the rant lol

There is a really good section in Wikipedia on blood libel and it deals with the history of human sacrifice, in which Jewish history has some, but it was very much spoken against by the prophets....

The Jewish people seemed to get more involved with that activity when they would start worshiping Baal and other Gods....
