The Watermelon football was one of the earlier footballs dated from the 1912-1920's era. It has a wider girth. It was originally not intended for the passing game but for the running game and it took considerable practice for a good spiral to be thrown with this ball. Knute Rockne in 1912 used this ball when he was a player for Notre Dame. He used the forward pass to propel Notre Dame over, the heavily favored, Army and created the early Notre Dame successes which he later would head up and even magnify more as their coach.
