I am looking to buy a puppy/dog with my girlfriend. However, my girlfriend is allergic to all of my favourite kinds of dogs. She likes the "old lady" dogs that "aren't REAL dogs". LOL!

What are the non-allergenic dogs that I can choose from? Is there a web site with a list?

Thank you for your answer!

Whenever people ask this question to the vet I work for he gives the same breeds...poodles, bichon frises, schnauzers (any size, they come in mini, standard, and giant), and basenjis. Poodles & bichons don't have fur like regular dogs, their coat is more like human hair so they shed very little. Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com, click the "All Breeds" tab at the top, then click "Want more search options?" about halfway down the page. There will be a catagory called "Allergies" and there is a list of dog breeds that are good for people with allergies. Some of those aren't pure breeds, they are those mixes that people like to give stupid names to and charge ridiculous amounts of money for because they think it's "designer" breed when all they are really doing is ripping people off since most of those dogs have a lot of health problems. Sorry 'bout that rant...anyway, just be sure to research which ever dog you think you want. Some of them aren't too "old lady" so hopefully you & your girlfriend will both be happy with what you pick!

There really isn't any such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.Dander is what causes allergies not the hair. All dogs have skin so therefore all dogs produce dander. Some dogs seem to cause people a higher allergic reaction then others do.

Some dogs that seem to produce lower allergy symptoms in people are:
Bischon Friese, Lhasa apso, Shih Tzu, Poodles (all sizes), Irish Water Spaniels, Portugese water Dogs, Yorkies,

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a dog with hair, not fur. Thats what you want to look at. But if someone is severly allergic, all dogs will bother them, even if they are shaved, the dander in the skin is what generally causes the allergy, some have more, some have less.
Good Luck!
ALSO if you like bigger dogs, a labradoodle, may be something to look into- they have showed to be a bit easier on the allergies!

I'm allergic to most short-haired breeds but I live with an Austrailian shepherd/Husky mix and I've never had a problem with ichiness or sneezing. Can't be in the same room with most labs/beagles etc. or else I go into a severe allergic reaction.

Even when I groom my double-coated dog I'm fine. I'd say test your girlfriend to many dogs and forget about specific breeds.

It may be the dander, not the fur itself your sister is allergic to. If that's the case, she'll be allergic to all dogs. All non shedding dogs will require a LOT of grooming. And you'll be brushing out dead fur, so you'll still have to put up with it a little bit. There really is no such thing as a non-shedding dog, except maybe the hairless ones.

Best answer coming up.

Something that the others answers did not mention, although they did recommend Poodles. A Poodle (large and small) do not have fur, they have hair and are therefore excellent dogs for persons with allergies. Myself I do not like them due to their yappieness but being a dog lover if I had no choice I would get one.
