If he is doing it in his sleep, it's probably not ear mites, but you never can tell. You might get some ear mite medicine to be on the safe side. Maybe he hugs his head to feel safe or just block out sounds. Cats have the most peculiar habits of any animal I have ever had including parakeets. Your cats sounds adorable.

Some cats like sleeping in a cat pile, like they were when they were kittens, Your cat just likes his head covered when kitty sleeps, don't worry about it its totally normal. When your kitty was a kitten he fell asleep on other kittens and mom. Cats in general like to sleep in weird position's that look uncomfortable.

aaawwww....
i bet he's cute as hell when he does this...
all my cats sometimes hugs their head when they sleep too. cats have these weird positions when they sleep.
i have one cat who likes to sleep stretched out on his back... very funny to look at but i'm told that when cats sleep like this, with their stomack exposed, it means that they completely trust their surroundings as well as their owners...
maybe your cats just wants to sleep that way...

Could be for security reasons, or simply just to help keep himself warm...Much like a child cuddles a blanket or stuffy. :)
