If you have been doing since he was a puppy, then it's his safe haven and he knows it.

Dogs come from the bear family, they like having a "den" for themselves. It could be a bed, a favorite chair and other spots. If you leave it open all the time when he is not in the crate, you might find he naps in it.

He is probably more upset he knows that you are parting ways for the night. Try moving it into the bedroom so he can be close to you.

dogs have a natural dening instinct. There crates make them feel safe it's gives them a place of there own. With anything it takes time for a puppy or dog to get use to it . But it keep them safe and also teaches they to hold there BM's and urine so it makes house training easier. I have 6 dogs all but one are crate trained. Some of my dogs just lay in there crates with the doors open, they think it's a good place to take a nap. Also when they get treats they run off to "there" crate to eat it so the other dogs don't bug them.

"Hey, if I look really, REALLY sad, maybe I can sucker my human into letting me stay up longer or giving me another bedtime treat!"

Seriously, I believe that dogs do have emotions, but I don't think they can consciously reason things out like we do. He probably remembers from experience that you're leaving and the fun is over for the day.

But whether he's "sad" or that's just how we interpret the expression is something we'll probably never know for sure.

Dogs don't like being caged up. How would you feel if somebody put you in a tiny 5 x 5 x 5 wired cage and left you there all night??
However, not to discredit the necessity for cages. I realize that some dogs need to be caged at night; when we first got our cocker spaniel, he wasn't really housebroken, so we had to keep him in the cage at night and when we were gone from home (school, work, etc.). Eventually we gave him more freedom when he realized that he wasn't to use the house for a bathroom- at all.
Some Friends of mine also used a cage to keep their dogs in at night, but I don't think they do it anymore.

NONAME gave a pretty good answer as well. :)

I don't know. My dogs go into their crates on their own when they are tired and I shut the door when I head to bed.

Just one time I wish I could stuff Zipper in this crate for the night.

He's thinking: I really wish that you would let me spend the night with you. I can be trained to sleep on the floor in your bedroom, and, if you want me to, I'll even snuggle with you on your bed.

That he hates you. Have you ever noticed how happy he is to get out?!?! He does not like it in there!! Its okay though, dont worry I go through the same thing with my dog. Its normal and he will be ok. Just make to give him extra attention when you take him out. Then it will be fine.

If he doesn't go into it willingly, I wouldn't do it to him. Doesn't matter what he is thinking. My dog sleeps on the outside of the covers on my bed, and loves it.
