Why would they outlaw cellphone usage in auto driving while it is perfectly ok to put on lipstick, while smoking a cig, while fixing mascara, while reading the paper, while drinking coffee, while eating your egg mcmuffin, while suposedly keeping your attention focused on the tast of conveying your auto down the highway at 65 - 75 miles and hour?

There are more people using cell phones than doing the other things, some of which, such as drinking coffee, aren't as distracting as talking to someone on a phone. People really shouldn't do some of the other things either, you're right on that point, but I still think you are missing the bigger picture. Too many people get into their conversations in such depth, that they are running red lights and not being able to stop on time. What if they hit a baby in a stroller? It's not worth the trouble.

Who says it is ok to do the tasks that you've mentioned? The point is that all these tasks are unsafe, and as anyone who holds a license knows (or should know) that not only are they unsafe, they're just plain stupid. It all comes down to basic common sense...those who continue to 'play' with things - cell phones, trying to read, etc. while driving are inconsiderate of others safety. Would we walk across a busy intersection reading the newspaper, even when the light is in our favour?

I'm in favour of banning cellphones while driving - I've seen too many close calls, and was nearly run down with 5 other people thanks to a moron yapping on her cellphone while making a left-hand turn at a very busy intersection. Odds were in our favour that night, my friend - a police cruiser was behind her, and she was subsequently pulled over and fined while we all not only witnessed, we applauded the officer!

Also, hands-free phones are a good idea, but still a distraction...if your call is so important, pull over and give IT your full attention.

Like you, I don't believe outlawing cell phone use is all that practical, but your question deserves an answer.

It's like a speeder asking why give me a ticket when there are so many OTHER speeders on the road, some of them even faster than me.

The officer's typical answer would be some thing along the linse of, "I caught YOU. YOU get the ticket."

So, if you can eliminate one cause of dangerous driving, it is a good thing.

Still, if laws are to be encacted in the name of safety, then the very same laws can easily include language that points to other distractions while driving such as applying make up, lighting a cigarette, talking with both hands waving, turning around yelling at the kids, etc.

There actually ARE laws in existance which allow officers to cite such careless drivers. Drivers, in most states, if not all, are expected to drive with "due dilligence," meaning, that they should be paying attention to their driving. Officers don't have to wait until the driver begins driving recklessly.

But the fear of lawsuits might put a damper on an over zealous officer. Stronger, and more specific law should help.

Cause most people cant drive and talk at the same time... add a cellphone in the mix and its even worse... and as far as the lipstick goes... i know of a lady who got a ticket for putting on lipstick while driving, and when she whined about it i laughed in her face and told her she deserved it.

all of the rest of that crap is against the law too, Lou--it's called "inattentive driving"...

and when I see the 17 yr old girl that hit my husband on his motorcycle--you know, the one that was yapping on her cell phone and wasnt paying attention, she'll be pulling that cell phone OUT OF HER ACE!
In fact, is this her? Cuz girl, you best watch out, Munya is LOOKING FOR YOU...that bike cost big bux baby and your pappy's insurance is jacking me around.

Because, it seems like the majority of people are doing this(cell phones) and are having more accidents then the DUI things.
