I'm sure they can; tigers can swim. Housecats hate water, but if they have to swim to keep from drowning, they probably will. Not sure I believe your story, either.
1) Why'd you take your neighbor's cat with you in the first place?
2) It's common knowledge that cats hate water.
3) that cat swam for about 10 feet then "sank like a rock"? Hm. |:-\

Cats dont enjoy going out in a boat or a motorcycle like a dog might. I wish people wouldnt make these mistakes.
If an animal is overheated, you put water ON them, not dunk them in water.
Most land creatures can instinctively swim, but have a fear of water, which you found out when you put the at in. Yes, cats can swim, but cats and dogs arent GOOD swimmers, and they tire easily. Your neighbors cat was stressed and it didnt last long in the predicament you place it. People who fall off cruise ships dont usually make it to shore, either.
So this cat who was overheated and frightened and afraid you were going to throw it in the water had all of its natural fears realized, and it drowned because of your stupidity.
You should explain to the cats owner why she can quit looking for her cat and apologize profusely for your ignorance. Ask how you can make it up to her and be sincere. Mowing the lawn for the rest of the summer or shovelling snow this winter might be a good start. Whatever you do for the owner will not be enough to make up for the grief of her loss and for the terror of a drowning death that you caused.
I hope you learn lessons from this and become more responsible before you become a parent.

Its a myth that cats can't swin. They can. Altho most cats don't really like water, some of them do. I had one who liked to lay in the toilet water. LOL I had to make sure the lid was down all the time. He also liked to get in my kids swimming pool. So some cats DO actually like water.
And, like someone else has already said ... WHY DIDN'T YOU GO AFTER HIM? Good grief!! What a friend you are!!! NOT!!

Well yes cats can swim it's just they dont like water. In the state I live in "Louisiana" you will go to jail for killing a animal. Killing a animal is like killing a person down here.

you let your neighbors cat drown? Even if you did know that they could swim you should have asked for permission 1st. You need to be honest with your neighbor. Don't you have a conscience??

Tigers like to swim. Domestic cats don't. However, most aniamls can swim to save their lives, domestics cats included. Not sure I believe your story.
