There are several types of colitis, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn's colitis, diversion colitis, ischemic colitis, infectious colitis, chemical colitis and atypical colitis.
A well known subtype of infectious colitis is pseudomembranous colitis, resulting from infection by a toxigenic strain of Clostridium difficile. Parasitic infections can also cause colitis.
Any colitis which has a rapid downhill clinical course is known as fulminant colitis. In addition to the diarrhea, fever, and anemia seen in colitis, the patient has severe abdominal pain and a clinical picture similar to septicemia with shock is present. Approximately half of those patients require surgery.
Irritable bowel syndrome is a separate disease which has been called spastic colitis or spastic colon. This name causes confusion since colitis is not a feature of irritable bowel syndrome.
Autistic enterocolitis is a disputed medical entity but refers to a type of colitis found in patients with autism.

hey there! I'm not sure which coloitis your talking about, but if it is Crohn's Colitis, whic is what I have. Then there is no proven thing that causes colitis. there are theroys tho. If this is the condition you speak of you should check out these two sites. 1. The first is the CCFA www.CCFA.org, it is the Crohns and colitis fonditaion. 2. This site is called Teens with Crohns you will meet great people there who are going through the same things you are. pages.prodigy.net/mattgreen/ I wish you the best of luck!

Colitis, inflammation of the inner lining of the colon (the main part of the large intestine, or bowel), or of the rectum (the terminal segment of the large intestine). Colitis is not, in itself, a disease, but is a general term covering any of the several diseases in which the colon is inflamed. These include ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, amoebic or bacillary dysentery, some cases of AIDS, and some worm infestations. The long-term use of powerful, broad-spectrum antibiotics (antibiotics that destroy a wide range of bacteria) can also cause colitis.

usually it is either a genetic cause or a bacterial cause - you get an infection from a bacteria and it causes ulcerative colitis or colitis (which is just colon inflammation). simple colon inflammation can be fixed usually by antibiotics, but if it is chronic (meaning it happens alot), then it may have to be fixed surgically.
