Many breeders have historically done this but nowadays it's part of the puppy check up to have the vet do this. The vet will check for normal heartbeats, normal palate and other things and this is also the time during the first week that the vet can also do the dewclaws if those are being removed.

If you are serious about it being done right, the best vets for this will be experienced vets that understand the breed standard for which they are doing the docking. Some breeds have longer or shorter docked tails and not all vets remember which length is correct for each breed. Contact the breeders of your bloodline for advice and they may be able to help.

Poodles are a breed as you might already know that require docking the tail to fit the breed standard. I have had some dogs that required this too-rat terrier, jack russel terriers.etc.- however no matter how experienced you are i dont suggest that you do but have a veterinarian do it instead. However there is one way that you can do yourself without having to worry about messing and causing harm to your dog. ere are two methods of docking. The majority of breeders used the technique known as "banding", in which a ligature, normally an orthodontic band, was placed over the end of the puppies tail at 24-96 hours old. This effectively cuts off the blood supply to the end of the tail, which comes away within 3 days.
However the method listed below I highly suggest a vet because many things can be done wrong,
Most vets used to cut the tail with surgical scissors. There is generally no need for stitches, but on occasions these can be used, especially with the larger breeds. Nowadays in the UK, vets are more than likely to use the banding method.

well, I know many breeders that do this themselves. Alot of thigs to consider here. First of all, the breeder you got your dog from should be, if able, to give you advice on this. Secondly, theres the breed standard to think about, you have to know how much to take off......I believe in Poodles its about a third, but I could be wrong. Third, you have to consider aseptic technique, especially depending on how old they are. Actually this is more important than breed confirmation. Sounds to me like your vet would be your best bet. Dont always expect your vet to know exactly how much to take off, as they usually depend on the breeder to mark and show them where they want them docked.

YES YES YES you can, but it must be no older than 3 to 5 days old.....take some ice and numb his tail, he wont feel a thing....take a rubber band, keep wrapping it around the tail until you cant wrap it any more, in a couple of hours the tail will drop off,,,,,clean the tip of the tail with alcohal, and put some cream on it...it will be fine

Honestly have a vet do it they will know exactly how much to take off and they know where on the tail to cut. U don't want the puppies 2 get older and have issues/sensitivity 2 their tails. If u want it done right and with the least pain possible have a vet do it! Please!

NO! You are risking excessive bleeding, infections, etc, plus you do not know exactly how to do it. The vet only charges about $5 each so why not have it done the right way?!

No, I'd leave this to a professional like a vet. They can handle complications better as well.

Also, if you do it yourself, you're taking chances on causing infection in the pups. Again, talk to your vet for any surgical proceedures.

NO. It's illegal for you to dock your dogs tails yourself . the only people who are allowed to that are vets.

Not unless you've had veterinary training. Too easy to hit a vein. Would if you know what to do if you botched the job?
