a good read is Mormonism, Mama, and Me.
I can't quite remember who it is by, but it was someone who grew up when it was founded. Her father knew Joseph Smith, but more specifically the one who took over after him. It is a very sad story, but there is hope at the end.

Blacks are less than Mormons? Gee, tell that to Gladys Knight, who's a Mormon. Or maybe to Ahmed Corbitt, a former Black Muslem who is my stake president here in New Jersey.

(For those who don't know, a "stake" is like a diocese, a collection of several congregations.)

Why do you think we think that? I certainly don't and I am a Mormon. What do you know that I don't know?

God created all of us. God loves us all. I am no better than anyone else and no one else is better than me. One might be better at certain things than I am, they might be walking the walk a little straighter than I am but we are all in this together.

Of course they don't.

In fact, in our last General conference, Gordon B. Hinkley, a man we revere as prophet, gave a talk telling people how bad racism was, and that it had no place in our church.

We don't think that, as we have thousands of Black members of the church all throughout the world.
