but when I use software to convert my mp3 files to wma files, the wma files are almost twice as large. Can anyone explain this?

It depends on to which compression degree you are saving them. Check your settings make the compression at lowest setting for smallest files.

it has to do with your bit-rate, if you set the bit-rate lower on your converter then it will be smaller than the wma, usually wma and mp3 are the same size... but size with these formats is all based on bit-rate (sound quality) the higher the bit-rate the larger the file, but also the better the sound quality of the file... so you have to choose whether you want small files or better sound.

Right. The lowest bitrate = the smaller the file= the worst it will sound. So unless you are listening to tunes on earphones, then keep the bitrate high to keep the music rockin' nicely (sounding better). If you can't figure out how to do it using your software, then give Windows Media player (free) a twirl.

Maybe you are increasing the bit rate ...
