old enough

I do not mind answering the question about how old I am as I am thankful I am here to tell them. But if you do not wish to answer you could always say either 1) As old as my tongue and older than my teeth or 2) How much money do you have in the bank as that usually shuts people up quickly. I am over weight and when someone asks me how much do I weigh that is what I ask them. It is surprising how quickly they let the question about my weight drop.

Wish you'd give the scenario because what if it's a person selling you alcohol or cigaretts but if you know the other persons age say i'm older/younger than you unless you're a teen then say too young and if he's/she's a teen say too old.

Simply telling them that you don't want to tell them your age is not evasive, it's honest. All those "clever" lines that people suggest rather than telling your age ARE evasive. Try being honest.

Ask "How old do I look?". If they answer a number that is younger than you really are or around the age that you are, say "good answer". If they answer a number that is older than you are, just say "wrong". If they insist on knowing your true age, just say "age is only in your mind".

I never really worry about it but ... once I was buying a bottle of wine and this kid asked, "Can I see your ID Ma'am?" My reply was that if I was old enough to be called ma'ma, he shouldn't need to see ID. Otherwise, just name a decade you enjoyed... ie. the 90's were informative for me, they can infer from there.

If it's a guy asking your age, he wants to know if you are jail bait. (under aged for what he has in mind). If someone is rude enough to ask that straight out, feel free to say, "Why do you ask?"

My answer to that question is "Why are you asking such a personal question?" If they persist, you can say "It is very rude to ask someone about his/her age." If they keep it up just say, 'My age is none of your business."

You can leave the group, change the subject or just stare at them.

I do. :O

Change the subject. Since it's not polite to ask someones age, ignoring them is polite enough.
Or ask them something crass like, how much money do you owe?
