Sorry to hear about your loss, putting down a pet is always one of the hardest things to do. Losing a pet is like losing a family member. There is really nothing I can say to make it better only time will cure your sadness. But there is a poem written by anonymous and it's called "If it should be".

I left a copy of it below, it's a tear jerker so read it when you are alone. it always makes me cry.........

If it should be I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle can’t be won
You will be sad, I understand,
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stands the test.
We’ve had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears
Would you want me to suffer? So
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they’ll tend
Only stay with me to the end
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
It is a kindness that you do to me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved
Do not grieve it should be you
Who must decide this thing to do -
We’ve been so close we two these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

Well you can never get over him/her dying. You can get through it. When two of my dogs had to be put down, I went to Pet co and made a dog tag. It says in loving memory, then there name RIP my angels and said the day they were put to sleep. You can do something like that, I know someone that has the collar and tag of her decreased cat hanging from here review mirror. It honestly depends on what you feel is the most appropriate thing. And as far as adopting or getting a new dog, don't rush if you don't think your ready for a new buddy then by all means get one. If not there is no need to rush into something. My deepest sympathy!

the vet gave me this poem called the rainbow bridge:

Because of its many colors the bridge connecting Heaven and Earth has come to be known as the Rainbow Bridge.

Just this side of the bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills, and lush green valleys. When a beloved pet dies, this wonderful place serves as their new home. They make new friends and play all day.

There is 1 thing missing from these carefree surroundings though, the companionship of their loving masters. Time passes and soon another day comes when one of them is distracted by a familiar scent. With nose twitching, ears at attention and eyes staring in delight, this one runs from the group...

YOU have been seen

As you embrace, your face is kissed again and again and once more you look into the eyes of your loyal companion.

You cross the rainbow bridge together, never again to be separated. (I hope this is what really happens)

Sorry for your lose

In time it will get better, though I don’t think anyone ever fully recovers from losing someone they loved whether its human or animals.

I wouldn’t recommend getting a new dog right away. You can’t replace something that you love, but in time i think you'll be able to find another dog or puppy, that needs your love and your old dog would ceartinly want that.

Don’t feel bad to have a good and long cry. Just remember you’ll be together again one day.

As a fellow dog lover who just had her dog pass away, all I can give you is encouragement. You may be dragging yourself through a long tunnel, but keep in mind that there's always a light there, a hope. You will get over this.

May be you can adopt another dog?

My condolences. Mourn your dog and as time goes on the pain will lessen. Remember the good times with them. Maybe after awhile you can go to the Animal Shelter and get a new dog.

So sorry for your loss. It will take time to get over the pain of losing your beloved pet. Take it one day at a time. When you feel like you are ready, get another pooch to love. It will help you.
