Turpentine is distilled from pine sap. It has a distinctive smell and a medium solvent effect. White spirits are also known as mineral spirits, which is a pretty ubiquitous solvent used with many household and commercial paints and stains. It's also useful as a cleaning agent. Turpentine and mineral spirits work on pretty much the same things, so if you can clean your brush with one, you can clean it some more with the other. Some people find the odor of turpentine objectionable and look for low-odor mineral spirits, which works pretty well as a substitute. The main difference is the source and the smell. They work about the same in my experience, and I have quite a lot of experience.

Turpentine is complex hydrocarbon obtained from the distillation of tree resins - chemical formula = C10H16 (approximate)
White spirit is derived from paraffin and is a mixture of saturated aliphatic and alicyclic C7 to C12 hydrocarbons with a maximum content of 25% of C7 to C12 alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons.
Both are used to dissolve paint and clean your brush.

Turps evaporates more slowly and smells stronger than white spirit. Polyclens type cleaners are best for brushes.
